This week I was reminded that real heroes don’t always wear capes.

Sometimes they wear scrubs.

I recently underwent surgery at Yale New Haven Hospital, and the team who cared for me showed incredible skill, compassion, and professionalism. From the surgical staff to the recovery nurses, from the admissions desk to the gentleman who wheeled me to the valet, everyone I encountered treated me with kindness and respect.

Because of them, I’m still here.

And I still have important work to do.

Through educational theatre and humor, I try to help young people make healthy choices, stand up to bullying, learn about sexual health, and understand alternatives to drugs and alcohol while encouraging compassion toward one another.

They gave me the chance to keep doing that work.

So I created a small comic-style thank-you card for the team that kept me around.
