Yale Dance Theater

Yale Dance Theater Faculty Director: Emily Coates
Artistic Associate: Lacina Coulibaly As part of the research, YDT dancers regularly post blog entries about their experience.

Yale Dance Theater is a faculty-sponsored, extracurricular initiative that enables Yale students to work with professional artists on the reconstruction of existing choreography and/or development of new work. YDT is a practice-based research initiative that allows students to investigate choreographic ideas and their historical context through a rigorous rehearsal process, resulting in a final pu

blic showing. YDT's mission is to track and contribute to current discourses in dance through an inquiry distinctly grounded in physical experience. Sponsored by the Arts Discretionary Fund in Yale College in cooperation with the Dance Studies curriculum, Theater Studies, and Alliance for Dance at Yale.

Calling All Yale Student Dancers!

The Yale Dance Lab will hold an audition on Tuesday, September 5 from 4-6 pm for the 2023-24 season which will include new works choregraphed by Brinda Guha, Emily Coates, and Lacina Coulibaly.

The audition will be held at Broadway Rehearsal Loft, 294 Elm Street, Room 303.

Rehearsals will take place during the fall semester on Tuesday from 4:00 – 7:00 PM and Thursday 4:00 – 6:00 pm from September 12 – December 8, 2022 (except October and November recesses). Rehearsals will continue Tuesdays and Thursdays in the spring semester January 16 – February 10. Public performances of Brinda Guha’s piece and choreography from Emily Coates and Lacina Coulibaly’s workshopping will take on Saturday, February 10, 2024.

Full attendance is required.

The project is open to students in Yale College and graduate programs.
**Students who are graduating in December 2023 may seek special permission from Emily Coates and Lacina Coulibaly to be involved.

Dancers of all styles and background are welcomed and encouraged to audition!

Tuesdays: Brinda Guha’s work is rooted in the legacies of Contemporary Indian dance, and yearns to reach spaces where qualities of community, transparency and womanhood are centered. This semester, Brinda plans to build a complex piece called "Mohabbat", a meditative song about love and letting go by Arooj Aftab.

Thursdays: Emily Coates and Lacina Coulibaly will develop new choreographic material that builds on their collaborative intertwining of West African and American dance forms with a live music component. This work will culminate in a new, large-scale original production to be premiered in the 2024-25 school year.

Announcement and Audition Call for

Yale Dance Theater Spring 2016

Yale Dance Theater’s spring 2016 project will investigate Gaga, a movement language developed in the late 1990s by choreographer Ohad Naharin that has become highly influential in international contemporary dance. Described by its practitioners as a language (not a technique), Gaga “…deepens dancers’ awareness of physical sensations, expands their palette of available movement options, enhances their ability to modulate their energy and engage their explosive power, and enriches their movement quality with a wide range of textures.”[1] Gaga tunes the dancer’s attention in new ways.
Gaga is not only used as a method of training, but also a choreographic tool. Led by artists Saar Harari, Executive Director of Gaga USA, and co-director Lee Sher, a theater director, YDT dancers will develop a new work using Gaga. The project will culminate in a public presentation of the new work in the Yale University Art Gallery on April 2nd (open rehearsal) and 3rd (public performance).
Rehearsals will begin Wednesday January 20th and run Wednesdays 5:30 – 8:30 pm and Saturdays 12:30 – 3:30 pm through the weekend of April 2nd and 3rd (with the exception of spring break).
*Yale Dance Theater has a small number of spots available for new members*

About Yale Dance Theater
Yale Dance Theater is a faculty-sponsored extracurricular dance initiative that applies a research agenda to the licensing of existing choreography and/or commissioning of new work. YDT creates a structure for our most talented students to interact with dance artists of the highest caliber over a longer period of time than afforded by one master class. YDT emphasizes this endeavor as an extension of the practice-based movement research methods honed in the dance studies courses. In the spirit of arts advocacy and outreach to the Yale and New Haven communities, we share our work publicly at the end of the semester in a final lecture demonstration. The dancers post their written reflections throughout the process on an online blog. Our work continues after the performance, as we aim eventually to publish YDT writing online and in print.
