Calder’s monumental stabile Deux Discs is installed within the 12,000-acre ranch of Tippet Rise Art Center in Fishtail, Montana, where it is on long-term loan from the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. The over twenty-seven-foot-long sculpture debuted in Calder’s major retrospective at the Musée National d’Art Moderne in 1965. “The biggest object was Deux Disques—too big to put inside, so it was erected on the sidewalk by the entrance,” Calder wrote. “Buses with visitors stopped and people got out to have their pictures taken in groups under the stabile; others took pictures of the object at various angles.”
