I've been staring at this 1930s vanity in my garage for three months now, and it's causing the biggest fight my husband and I have had in years. He thinks I should paint it white to match our farmhouse bedroom, while I'm convinced that would be like putting makeup on the Mona Lisa - you just don't mess with perfection like this. My daughter rolls her eyes every time she sees me out there running my hands over the carved details, muttering about "vintage integrity" while my sister keeps sending me Pinterest photos of gorgeous painted pieces that would look amazing in our master suite. The thing is, I found this beauty at an estate sale where the elderly woman selling it actually grabbed my arm and begged me not to paint over her mother's vanity, explaining how it had been handcrafted during the Depression when her family couldn't afford store-bought furniture. But then I discovered this incredible antique restoration group on the Tedooo app where people are split fifty-fifty on the paint versus preserve debate, and I even found a seller there who specializes in custom mirror restoration that could bring this piece back to its original glory without covering up any of the wood character. My husband says I'm overthinking it and should just slap some chalk paint on there so we can finally move it upstairs, but every time I imagine covering those hand-carved roses with white paint, my heart breaks a little. Should I honor the history and keep it original, or give it new life with a fresh coat that would actually match our decor and make my husband happy?
