Introducing ‘Be: Held: Contemporary Analog Art with artists Johanna Aenderl, Jenny Zoey Casey and Rachel Singel’ at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art. This latest group exhibit will have an opening reception tomorrow, Saturday, September 12 from 3-5 p.m. with artist Rachel Singel and exhibit as well as gallery curator Audra Verona Lambert present discussing artworks on display and light refreshments provided. On view September 12 - October 31, 2026, enjoy this contemporary analog art exhibit and learn more about handmade arts in the region and across the United States. This show features handmade artworks spanning fiber art, mixed media sculpture and works on paper shaped by artists with links to Minnesota, Illinois and Kentucky. Emphasizing the labor-intensive nature of contemporary handmade artworks, artists on view in Be, Held sustain practices frequently in dialogue with traditional American pioneer vernacular and folk styles.

We hope you had a chance to enjoy your visit to Aya Rodriguez-Izumi‘s Aya Rodriguez-Izumi solo show “Signals” on view at the NHGCA. We want to end on featuring this collaborative artwork, created by New Harmony-based woodworker Charlie Gaston: an “Indiana style Tokonoma”. In Japan, these alcove spaces are placed inside of buildings to welcome the visitor while also presenting information about the purpose of that space. This Tokonoma features a suite of prints of Aya‘s conceptual flags, showcasing some of her ideas for “nobori” (signal flags) which represent a range of ideas, feelings, or specific experiences. Through conversation with Charlie and exhibition curator , NHGCA‘s own Audra Verona Lambert, Aya was able to provide the sizes of these printed conceptual flag prints so Charlie could make this beautiful, reclaimed wood cabinet ‘Signals”. Today is the final day to visit the exhibition, so be sure to stop by before 5 PM for one last chance to visit before we close for a week of install! What a lovely full ☀️ day of Okinawan-inspired art activities and presentations in Vanderburgh & Posey Counties! 🎨 thanks to Aya Rodriguez-Izumi and to our hosts at University of Southern Indiana Outreach & Engagement’s Principal Owa & team at the Southern Indiana Japanese school! Student learners practiced simple Okinawan greetings, with Aya sharing about her work as an artist in dialogue with Okinawan culture, before launching into a fun “aizome” tie dye workshop with indigo fabric led by the wonderful teachers at the school. Students each made their own design, creating uniquely beautiful indigo dye print patterns on their mini tenugui cotton cloth, artworks. Students paid rapt attention to the process, excitedly sharing their final tenugui results with their teachers and family members volunteering onsite.
🚗🚙 After a quick lunch, Aya and Gallery Curator, Audra Verona Lambert, returned to New Harmony for Aya’s afternoon reception at the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art from 3 p.m., where prize-winning local artist and woodworker Charlie Gaston joined the internationally exhibiting, New York-based artist in her presentation on themes present in her solo show “Signals” up through Fri, Sept 4. This compelling talk was conversational and insightful, the talk is recorded on our YouTube channel — visit our page for the link to watch.
Thank you to the artist, our SIJS staff and volunteers, NHGCA staff, and the incredibly supportive NHGCA advisory board members who welcomed Aya to Evansville-New Harmony with open arms! Final Days for Aya Rodriguez-Izumi’s ‘Signals’ through Friday, September 4. Aya Rodriguez-Izumi exhibits these ‘Nobori,’ or Japanese Signal Flags, that represent unification of her dual identities as an Japanese/Okinawan and American. Thus, exhibiting works symbolize hope and community through unbroken circles, shapes, lines, and expressive colors. Gouache artworks on paper make information on the artist’s process more accessible, and enable further understanding by the visitor. The Tokonoma cabinet in the middle — purpose-built for this exhibit — links the exhibit directly to New Harmony, IN through its maker, local woodworker Charlie Gaston. In the cabinet reside sketches and studies for the ‘Signals’ series, referencing how the medium of the flag has been used as marketing and as war banners in Japan’s past. Although closed this Saturday, September 5, the New Harmony Gallery of Contemporary Art is open regular hours 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday.

Saturday for the long weekend, we encourage you to enjoy your time visiting New Harmony for the long weekend and encourage you to return on September 12th for our next exhibition opening that Saturday from 3-5 p.m.!

🇺🇸✨ Mark your calendars for Lights of Liberty: A Drone Show in New Harmony on Saturday, September 5, 2026!

Join us for a free evening of live music, food vendors, family activities, and a spectacular drone light show above the Atheneum lawn. This special celebration honors both the bicentennial of New Harmony's Community of Equality and America's 250th birthday, bringing together history, community, and innovation in a uniquely New Harmony way.

The fun begins at 5 p.m. with food vendors followed by performances by Third Thursday Bluegrass, The Liberty Belles, and the Rodenberg Blue House Band. As the sun sets, 200 illuminated drones will take to the night sky in a choreographed tribute to liberty and community beginning at 9:05 p.m.

Bring a blanket or lawn chair, gather your family and friends, and enjoy an unforgettable Labor Day weekend evening in New Harmony. Admission is free and no tickets are required.
