The World Around is proud to share that our founder and Executive Director Beatrice Galilee has been named to the Wallpaper* US400 for the third consecutive year. The annual list honours those defining America’s creative landscape across art, design, architecture, and more. Beatrice’s work with The World Around, the Young Climate Prize , and a decade of curatorial practice continues to change how architecture engages with the future.

We are grateful to Wallpaper* for the recognition and thrilled to see her in such exceptional company.

On May 9, we brought together an international community of architects, designers, artists, and civic leaders for The World Around Summit 2026, a sold-out program of inspiring presentations, original videos, and stimulating discussion at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.

Co-organized by Beatrice Galilee, founder and executive director of The World Around, and Martino Stierli, Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design at MoMA The Museum of Modern Art, the Summit convened speakers from the United States, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Ireland, Chile, Mexico, Vietnam, Algeria, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium to highlight the breadth and vitality of ideas shaping the built environment today.

Together, their contributions made a case for an architecture that is both critically engaged with the world as it is, and resolutely imaginative about what it could become.

Thank you to everyone who joined us to keep the ideas flowing at the after party. We couldn’t think of a better end to the day 🥂

Today, in New York as in cities around the world, the housing crisis is not an abstraction, but a fact that pervades urban life, raising questions that architecture alone cannot answer but cannot afford to ignore. Titled High Time, the final session of Summit 2026 opened the theater as a civic forum to discuss the political, economic, and moral question of how modern societies should house their populations.

Moderated by Michael Kimmelman, architecture critic for The New York Times, the wide-ranging conversation featured contributions from NYC’s Deputy Mayor for Housing and Planning, Deputy Mayor Leila Bozorg, Pritzker Prize winner ELEMENTAL, and acclaimed architect Tatiana Bilbao (Tatiana Bilbao ESTUDIO).

Bozorg grounded the conversation in the program’s host city, offering insight into realities of housebuilding in New York and the Mamdani administration’s plans to make the city’s housing more affordable, while Aravena and Bilbao brought a global perspective to the conversation, sharing concrete models, instructive lessons, and grounded, innovative approaches from their libraries of international projects.

In the second session of Summit 2026, Keeping Time, a group comprising some of the most innovative designers and documenters of the built environment shared work that reconsiders how we think about heritage to ask what we want our future societies to look like.

began the session with a new museum in Senegal conceived as a place of return for pre-colonial artifacts. shared the collaborative process behind a handicrafts center on an Andean caldera, built using practices transmitted across generations. In an original new video, Søren Pihlmann () toured a former Copenhagen factory building his practice “recycled” into an animated space for arts and community. Róisín Henghan of chronicled a monumental museum testament to the scale and significance of ancient Egyptian civilization near the Pyramids of Giza, and presented his practice documenting the legacies of ascension and decline held in the built environment of West Africa. To close the session, put his firm’s transformative design for the esplanade of Paris’s most emblematic cathedral into broader, climatic context.
