How did a medieval knight clean the rust off thousands of tiny iron chainmail rings after a rainstorm? Maintaining armor was a never-ending nightmare. Iron chainmail oxidizes and rusts incredibly fast when exposed to sweat and damp medieval weather. Trying to manually scrub 30,000 tiny interlocking rings with a rag was physically impossible. Instead, the knight’s squire utilized an ingenious, automated cleaning hack. They took a small, watertight wooden barrel and shoved the rusty chainmail inside. They dumped in a heavy mixture of coarse river sand and highly acidic vinegar. The squire would seal the barrel shut and violently kick and roll it back and forth across the castle courtyard for an hour. The acid dissolved the rust, while the coarse sand acted as a powerful abrasive, aggressively grinding the thousands of iron rings against each other until they shined like mirrors. What did the average medieval person actually drink their ale out of? While kings used solid gold goblets and the absolute poorest peasants used rough clay cups, the most popular, iconic drinking vessel of the Middle Ages was the Mazer. This was a wide, shallow wooden bowl, expertly turned on a high-speed foot-lathe. Woodworkers exclusively sought out maple wood, specifically the dense, swirling knots (burls) of the tree, which made the bowl incredibly hard and beautifully patterned. However, wood naturally expands and contracts with hot and cold liquids, causing the thin drinking edge to eventually splinter and crack. To permanently protect their investment, owners brought the wooden bowl to a silversmith, who hammered a tight, overlapping band of silver or copper directly around the lip. This created a highly durable, beautiful, and waterproof drinking vessel that could last a lifetime. Would you drink ale out of a wooden bowl? Like this post.
