The mechanical shark used during the filming of Jaws was plagued with problems from the very beginning. It worked perfectly in testing… until it was placed in the actual ocean. Salt water and complicated mechanics turned Bruce into one very expensive headache.

Ironically, those failures helped create movie history.

Forced to show less of the shark, Steven Spielberg leaned into suspense instead. The result? One of the most iconic films ever made.

Despite what many people believe, “Bruce” — the mechanical shark used in Jaws — actually worked perfectly during testing at Universal Studios.

The problem?

Those tests were done in fresh water. 🤦🏻‍♂️

Once Bruce arrived on Martha’s Vineyard and was placed in the Atlantic Ocean, saltwater wreaked havoc on the shark’s controls, creating delays, frustrations, and a production nightmare that has since become Hollywood legend.

And that’s exactly where our story begins.
