The 2026 Cattle show. I have been around the fair for about 20 years now, but this year there was an empty chair in the corner of the arena during the show. Gene Bergschneider passed earlier this year, he was not in his usual spot, Chris was working the ring, and things felt a little different without his Dad there. We thank Gene for his years of dedication to the fair, and especially to the cattle show. Several years ago I caught him sitting at the table in the empty show ring. I did a short video interview with him, I asked how long he had been coming to the fair, and he said he was pretty sure he was at the very first fair they had in Sangamon County. -Jane Harris

One of my favorite livestock shows is the rabbit and poultry shows. It does not take a lot of land or a livestock trailer! The poultry judge takes time to discuss with each of the exhibitors. I also caught some exhibitors getting their goats ready to show. -Jane Harris, Photographer
