We are thrilled to announce that our current exhibition, "Colors of Pride," has been extended through Thursday, September 8th!

Colors of Pride is a series of vibrant photographic portraits of members of New England's LGBTQIA+ community, shot by UMass Dartmouth photography student Chris Diani and presented in Gallery 244 at Star Store Campus. The series aims to celebrate the diversity within the LGBTQIA+ community. It was inspired by the "More Color, More Pride" flag that added black and brown stripes to the traditional Pride flag in 2017 to establish a commitment to diversity and reject white supremacy within the q***r community.

An artist talk with Chris Diani is planned for the exhibition's closing night, Thursday, September 8th from 8-9 pm.

The galleries at Star Store Campus are open Monday through Saturday 9am to 6pm, Sundays 9am to 5.30pm, free of charge. Open until 9pm during AHA! Nights (the second Thursday of every month). Closed major holidays.

Rosie Amato
little, like a vision
November 22 - December 4th, 2021

In this exhibition of jewelry, Amato examines the tension between meaning and materiality through a collection incorporating the miniature figure. Through the processes of lost wax casting and sandcasting, cavities left by hand-carved wax figures were filled with molten metal, yielding the figures used throughout the collection. Utilizing a range of other traditional and inventive jewelry techniques, the figures became wearable jewelry. Their juxtaposition against the living body of the viewer and/or wearer is intended to both activate the artificiality of the miniature, and the emotive, narrative quality of the figure. Drawing from sources of memory and mental visualization, the works broadly explore the novel position of the miniature figure, placing it somewhere between object, simulation, person, and character.

Eric Lintala: Question of Balance
Location: Gallery 244, UMass Dartmouth Star Store Campus
Dates: June 30- Sept 5, 2021
Gallery Hours: Mo-Fri 9 am - 6 pm

Professor emeritus Eric Lintala was the faculty supervisor of graduate student-run Gallery 244 from its inception at the Swain School of Design in 1983 until his retirement. This summer, Gallery 244 hosts sculpture and photographs representing Lintala’s 45 years of research into the prehistoric rock art of the American Southwest.
Professor Lintala has traveled extensively throughout the United States and abroad researching prehistoric rock art, a broad term for prehistoric human-made markings found on natural surfaces, including petroglyphs and pictographs. These travels, most concentrated in the American southwest, have had a profound influence on his work. In 1994, Lintala made a major discovery of a rock art panel not yet recorded in Salt Creek Canyon, located in South Central Utah.
Professor Lintala has received numerous awards, grants, and commissions including the Holocaust Memorial for Buttonwood Park in New Bedford, the 9/11 Memorial in Acushnet Massachusetts, the 9/11 Memorial in Westport Massachusetts, the Silver Medal for sculpture at the International Art Competition LA Summer Olympics 1984, a Sculpture Fellowship from the Artist Foundation in Boston, and several research grants from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth.

This exhibition is open concurrently with Marc St. Pierre: Black & White at the University Art Gallery, celebrating the rich cultural heritage of the Swain School of Design in New Bedford. Both Eric Lintala and the late Marc St. Pierre were originally hired as professors at Swain and taught alongside one another throughout its evolutions, as it was absorbed by Southeastern Massachusetts University in 1988 which later became the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Gallery 244, like many elements of the current College of Visual and Performing Arts, originated from Swain where it was founded by alum Don Wilkinson.
