This Page is in support of The Seagull Cinderella, a Sculpture by Donna Dodson. The work of Art is under scrutany by a group of New Bedford Citizens who do not appreciate her being on display on Route 18 until October, and they have begun a petition to call for her removal. It is disappointing to see that there are quite a few people in New Bedford who would like to see the removal of The Seagull
Cinderella by Donna Dodson. There is reasoning behind their feelings about the sculpture, yes, but it is not offensive in the least, it is a joyful, proud, stoic & beautiful work of art. What upsets me is that a petition would be started to remove art, being that it was art that has brought New Bedford back to life in the last fifteen years. Before this current thriving downtown art scene, there was very little action around here... The New Wave Cafe(RIP), a monthly Gallery X show, maybe something at The Z, and very little else. Then a few skaters with some guts opened up Solstice and No Problemo, then Pour Farm and Green Bean came to life. UMASS took a chance and opened The Star Store. Then the biggest boom to the local arts, A-HA Night began. Month after month for a dozen years, through all weather, downtown has been rocking the streets with Art, Music and Culture. This fire, fifteen years of hard work and dedication from Artists of all circles, is what has rejuvenated this City. New Bedford is now considered one of the best places in the Country for a thriving Artist to live. We went from Muttonville to The Tops. This is because of People who believed in The Arts. It reflects in the entire City. People are happier then they were fifteen years ago. We aren't as beaten down. We have more pride in this town. I'm disappointed in those who live here, and who have seen their City become just a bit more classy with some visual pizzazz, that they would unite to call for the removal of a work of Art, the very thing that put NB back on the map.
