“You could say I’m a material girl….that is, that I love experimenting with sustainable and textural art materials! I enjoy pushing them as far as possible to see what they can do, and what they can hold and support, while conveying my concerns about the environment, the aging process, and the interconnectedness of living things. Sometimes things work as I expect and, sometimes (often!), they don’t. It’s always a surprise and what keeps me wanting to explore further.

These are some sculptural experiments using a variety of fibers (cotton, silk, and kozo) and biomaterials (chitin from shellfish and a nanocellulose developed from trees). I’ll be utilizing some of these ideas in future bodies of work.” Lia Rothstein
“I’m delighted to announce that my work is included in two publications coming out this Fall 2026. First is the second edition of the book on cold wax techniques by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin titled “Cold Wax Medium: techniques, concepts & conversations”. This volume includes the work of artists around the world and I am delighted to be included. The first edition also included my work and I’m looking forward to getting my copy and learning more about this amazing art material myself. My work with biomaterials is also going to be included in a publication from Germany by art historian Yorick Berta titled “Ideal Matter. Art, Bioplastics, and the Quest for Degradation” published by DeGruyter. More information on this book coming soon…….

South End Open Studios 2026 is celebrating an extraordinary milestone—the 40th anniversary of bringing artists, their studios, and the public together in Boston’s vibrant and historic South End.

This free annual public event takes place this weekend, September 19 and 20. New England Wax member Charyl Weisbach has opened her studio many times for this event, and she’s excited to join fellow artists, galleries, and craft artists for this year’s event, fostering meaningful connections among fellow artists and neighbors within the South End community.
