Hatch Street Studios

Hatch Street Studios Hatch Street Studios is a community of artists, artisans and designers working in a renovated textile

Hatch Street Studios is located in a four-story brick building in New Bedford’s historic North End. With a history as part of one of the most productive mill complexes in the region, the property was purchased in 1995 by the owner of a cryogenics company, who rented out the top two floors to small creative ventures. In time, visual artists began moving in and setting up their studios. The building

was purchased in 2015 by area businessman Jeff Glassman, who has continued to welcome artists and restore the premises. The rooms at 88-90 Hatch Street currently serve as working spaces for more than 60 artists who use a wide variety of media including painting, drawing, fine furniture, jewelry, fiber art, clothing design, sculpture, and antiques restoration.

🎨 A life spent creating.

The art world lost an icon this month with the passing of Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama at the age of 97.

Most of us recognize her work immediately — the polka dots, the pumpkins, the incredible Infinity Mirror Rooms. But perhaps one of the most inspiring parts of her story is that she simply never stopped creating.

Kusama continued painting until the final days of her life.

Think about that for a moment.

For more than seven decades, she kept creating, experimenting and putting her own unmistakable vision into the world. Her work wasn't simply something she did. It was part of who she was.

And maybe that's one of the greatest things an artist can leave behind.

Not just the paintings, sculptures or installations themselves, but the reminder to keep making the work that feels like yours. Keep experimenting. Keep evolving. Keep creating — whether the world understands it yet or not.

Because somewhere along the way, a simple dot can become unmistakably yours. ❤️

Rest in peace, Yayoi Kusama. Thank you for reminding generations of artists just how infinite creativity can be.

👀 OKAY… I NEED YOUR IDEAS!

If you were coming to Fall Open Studios at Hatch Street Studios, what would make you even MORE excited to come? 🍂🎨

Local vendors and makers?
Live demonstrations?
Music?
Young artists?
Something completely different that we haven’t even thought of yet?

Tell me in the comments! 👇

We are just 78 DAYS AWAY from Fall Open Studios, and I’ve been out doing a little recruiting… 👀

Of course, our Hatch artists are the reason for Open Studios. You’ll be able to wander through the buildings, step inside their working studios, see where they create, meet the artists themselves, and take home a piece of original art.

But while you’re here… what else would make the weekend even better?

And if you’ve been to Open Studios before, I especially want to hear from you. What did you love? What would you like to see more of? What would make you see a post about this year’s event and think…

“Ohhhh, I definitely need to go to THAT.”

I have plenty of ideas brewing over here 😏, but before I get too carried away, I want to hear yours.

September is right around the corner, so save the date for AHA! Night: NB Cultures on Thursday, September 10th.

In Custom House Square, First People Encounter will present “Somos las Raíces / We Are the Roots” from 4-8 PM. Storytelling, music, dance, art, food, and cultural traditions come together to honor the First Peoples of these lands and the roots, histories, and traditions that continue to thrive today.

The experience creates space to highlight Indigenous Caribbean, Borikén (Puerto Rican), Wampanoag, and other Indigenous communities. All are welcome to participate, share, connect, and celebrate the cultures that continue to grow from these ancestral roots.

Throughout the evening, there will be games, community art activities, and resource tables. Interactive culture talks will happen at 5 and 6:30 PM, with a variety of musical and dance performances, including an educational performance from Bomba de Aquí with guest drummers and dancers at 5:30 PM and “The Evolution of Dance Through Afro-Caribbean Cultural Influence” featuring JunnYahh and invited performers at 7 PM.

As part of AHA! Night, there will also be free access to local museums, arts and crafts, live music, the return of the Zeiterion’s Jazz Jam, and late night activities happening after 8 PM during AHA! After Dark. Activities are added to the schedule each day, so learn more on our website.
