Spirit Tribe Studio

Spirit Tribe Studio Spirit Tribe Studio honors Native American history & diversity in artistic expression. Overall, Shelly's work is a celebration of life and the natural world.

Shelly Bays-Costa is a multi-medium artist from the Pacific Northwest who has a deep appreciation for the cultures of the Southwest. Growing up in Colorado and regularly exploring the region with her family had a lasting impact on her and is reflected in her art. Shelly studied Visual Arts at Skagit Valley College, but considers herself primarily self-taught.

Shelly has coined the term "Expressi

ons of Abundance" to describe her artistic style and the pieces she creates. In particular, her original clay figurines honor Native American history and are a testament to her deep respect for the cultures of the Southwest. These figurines are also the inspiration for the name of her business, Spirit Tribe Studio. Her pieces, whether they be clay figurines or works in other mediums, are infused with a sense of abundance and a tribute to the cultures that have inspired her. By honoring Native American history through her art, Shelly hopes to bring attention to and preserve the rich cultural traditions of the Southwest.

COVID and moving to Illinois have forced me to try some new ways (and resurrect some old) to keep my fingers and my brain busy. I have tried punch rug hooking, toothbrush rug braiding, pre-cutting vintage feedsack fabric for quilters, Zentangles, watercolor, art journals, pipe cleaner flower fairies, and my latest is needle felting.

I’ve been inspired by memories of Washington, photos by my son Alex, vintage postcards and art I have seen and collected snippets of for years. At least 2 more flat needle felted pieces are rumbling around in my head. Native American inspired Spirit Tribe figures are always flitting in and out of my creative soul. That means that some of those peoples will figure out how to exist. I’ll work on posting things as I go.

Some of my pieces — Horseshoes, Ojo de Dios (beaded crosses), Wish Wands, and Beach Pebble/Glass art, are on display at Antiques, Etc. in Lebanon, IL. I’ll take some photos when I go in today.

PS - the sticks are how I plan to hang my pieces.
