I’d said I love you before.
To other women.
It came out fine. Practiced, almost.

With her I said it in a parking lot
under bad lighting
in the middle of a sentence about something else entirely.

She went quiet.
Then she looked at me like she was checking if I was real.

I’ve never felt so seen in my life.
And so terrified.

Both at the same time.
That’s how I knew.

She Always Ordered First

She never waited for me to order for her.
Didn’t look at me for permission, didn’t hesitate.

“The salmon. Medium. And whatever wine you think goes with rain.”

The waiter blinked. I fell a little.

She did everything like that — like the world was already hers and she was just deciding what to keep.

I should have told her.
Not that she was beautiful. She knew that.
That she was the only person who ever made me feel like I was the one being chosen.

She ended things on a Tuesday.

Said I never let her in.

She wasn’t wrong.

I still order salmon sometimes.
Medium.

And whatever wine goes with rain.
