Bob Peterson’s comments on Sunday’s matinee performance of It’s a Wonderful Life at the Nevada Theatre when the power went out.
“The lights flickered off, replaced by emergency halogens. The performers, including the eminent John Gardiner as George Bailey himself and Sky Seals) on the piano, rolled on like nothing had happened. The light lent the space a delightfully dreamlike air. Dustmotes sparkled. Color faded from the stage until everyone looked like characters from a black and white projection.
At the play's end, when sweet Clarence finally gains his wings, one of the stagehands shone a single beam on the angel adorning their Christmas tree. I half expected Gladys Herdman to come barreling down the aisle.
I don't want to underplay whatever disappointment the performers might've felt about the outage, but for my part, I wouldn't trade the experience for anything. A small and nimble cast brought this immortal story to life in rare form. There are a few performances left, and I encourage you to get out and see it.”
