Here is a beautiful full sterling silver overlay Arizona cheek spade bit by Raphael (Filo) Gutierrez. Filo was the master engraver whose career stretched over 50 years. This bit has classic Gutierrez engraving and is in pristine condition. It features a spoon spade mouthpiece with copper wrapped braces. Everything is 100% original.

Gutierrez was born in Northern California, and by age 16 Gutierrez was working as a bit and spur maker in Sacramento California with Bernard Valenzuela before joining GS Garcia in Elko, Nevada in 1911 where he is credited with the production of some of Garcia’s finest work. Legendary but short-lived, the Cheyenne, Wyoming partnership of Bill Phillips and Raphael (Filo) Gutierrez, lasted from 1917-1918. Filo returned to Northern California in 1920 where he joined Juan Estrada. Gutierrez made bits and spurs for Hamley, Olsen-Nolte, Fred Stern and GS Garcia in addition to his own maker-mark. Exceptionally nice set of floral carved and basketweave pattern taps. These are in excellent shape commensurate with their age, and are very solid overall and could still be used. Outstanding pair of silver Inlaid double crescent moon California spurs by Juan Francisco Echavarria (1847-1917). Featuring his very unique and distinctive trademark - alternating foliated and cross hatched silver design patterns of engraving. The inside heel bands have chased iron patterns, another distinct feature of the San Jose makers. The ends of the heel bands are forged in fancy leaf shapes and the buttons have checkerboards chased in the iron, another distinct symbol of the San Jose makers.

1 3/4”-10 point rowels with each point done in finely chased iron. The spur leathers have beautiful glass domed conchos. Original heelchains. In excellent condition, made circa 1880s. 6 1/2” total length. 1 3/4” long shanks. 3 1/4” heel openings. 1 1/2” glass domed conchos. Asking 1750.

Juan Francisco Echavarria was an early California Bit and Spur maker renowned for his exceptional iron work and fine silver engraving. Echavarria made bits and spurs for many of the pioneer San Jose makers including Hernandez, Atanasio Larios, F M Stern and Messing and Sons. Chilean born, Juan arrived in the States at age 22 settling in San Jose, California where he became a blacksmith, then a bit and spur maker. By the turn of the century his reputation was widespread, making spurs for Main and Wi******er and his spurs appeared in the L D Stone catalog.

Outstanding pair of vintage double mounted sterling silver inlaid card suit spurs by Les Vogt. These are new old stock and have never been used and have all of the original blueing on the iron. The outside heel bands have large card suit shapes that are sterling silver and done in relief. The inside heel bands have inlaid sterling silver card suits. Both spurs are numbered and marked inside the heel band with the Les Vogt stamp. Asking 675.

This is a rare and unique set of antique Mexican silver spurs made circa early 1900s. They are from a historical Southern California collection of bits and spurs that contained some extremely important pieces of Spanish colonial items, including a pair of spurs that were given to Jose Antonio Yorba, a Spanish soldier with the Portola party which arrived in California in 1769. An exceptional pair of spurs that are extremely finely finished. 5 point 1.5” rowels. Outside swinging heel buttons are cactus blossoms, the center of each blossom is gold. Each rowel is also inlaid with engraved silver. They have 3” wide heel openings. Asking 495.

This pair is in exquisite condition with a nice patina indicative of its age.

An exceptional pair of spurs featuring flower and leaf pattern silver inlay with single point engraving, large silver inlaid hearts, and vertical striped sterling silver on the inside heel bands. 6” long overall, 20 point 2” rowels, 3/4” wide heel bands, and 3” wide heel openings. Swinging buttons inlaid with silver flowers. Asking 550.

This pair is in exquisite condition with a nice patina indicative of its age.

Delightful vintage silver inlaid wagon wheel pattern bit with a 5 1/8” wide Salinas mouthpiece. In excellent condition and perfect for using, or add it to your antique bit and spur collection. Bit is marked “Gilbert Jacobo”. The mouthpiece has fine copper striping on the rear with a large copper roller that spins freely. Asking 495.

Very nice vintage Nevada Cheek spade bit. This bit has very loose cheeks and nice silver overlay with single point engraving. The mouthpiece is 5 1/4” wide and has a spoon spade mouthpiece with copper wrapped braces. This would be great to put to use again if you desired — any horse would be very pleased to carry it in his mouth. Or make it the centerpiece of your antique California bit collection. Asking 395 obo.
