Bunny and the Bulls

The 38th annual Western Visions Art Show + Sale is over but, lucky for you, two of my more recent Show entries are still available for purchase.

Briar Rabbit (top, oil on panel, 12 x 16") was inspired by a cottontail rabbit I saw all snuggled up in the snow under a thorny briar tree off my driveway in New Jersey.

Gladiators (bottom, oil on panel, 11 x 18-1/2") depicts an encounter that my son, Richard, and I, witnessed between two large bull moose near the Blacktail Ponds Overlook in Moose, Wyoming, just outside of Jackson.

For more information and pricing, please message me here.

THERE'S STILL TIME!
The 38th annual Western Visions Art Show + Sale continues through this Sunday, Sept. 28th, at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, WY. This year's exhibition includes more than 170 artists, including yours truly. I have been participating in this sale almost annually now for approximately 30 years. My entry for this year, titled "In Nature's Realm", a 13 x 18" oil painting of a Shiras/Wyoming Moose (see previous post), is still available for auction, as are many other fine works of art. If you're in the Jackson area and you haven't seen the show yet, make sure to find a few hours this week and go check it out. You can also view the full gallery of paintings on the museum's website, https://www.wildlifeart.org

In the meantime, here are some of my other most notable entries in the Western Visions exhibition over the years (see below).

Last week for the Western Visions exhibition at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, WY. My latest entry, titled “Shiras Moose,” 🫎 is still available for purchase. You can also find signed copies of my book, “In Nature’s Realm: The Art of Douglas Allen,” for sale in the Museum’s Shop. A limited number of copies remain. If you’re in the area, please stop by the museum and catch the show!

It's officially fall! In the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, autumn means more than just golden aspens...it’s also the moose mating season, known as the rut. From mid-September to mid-October, bull moose bulk up, dig scent pits, and engage in head-to-head battles to win over cows (females). Please always remember to keep your distance and stay 25 yards from moose at all times. Want to get closer? Stop by the Museum where you're encouraged to safely approach.

This is the last week to view our Western Visions exhibition, open through this Sunday (9/28). There are still pieces available for purchase! Explore the available artworks now: https://bit.ly/42D91Fd

IN NATURE'S REALM

The Shiras, or Wyoming Moose, has antlers that can span up to five feet and weigh 50 pounds. A young bull moose begins growing his antlers as a yearling, and the antlers continue to grow in size until he reaches peak maturity, generally around age 7 or 8.

The Wyoming Moose below, titled "In Nature's Realm," is my latest submission into the annual Western Visions® Art Exhibition, to be held September 6-28 at the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The exhibition and sale is the museum's longest-running fundraiser, and is a signature event of the Jackson Hole Fall Arts Festival. I have been participating in the exhibition fairly regularly since the early 1990s. I've painted several bull moose for the show in the past, but I feel like this might be my best.

Coincidentally, my recently published tome is also titled "In Nature's Realm." For those of you in Jackson Hole for the Fall Arts Festival and Western Visions® exhibition, I'm having talks to hold a meet and greet and book signing at the National Museum of Wildlife Art the week of the sale, or September 8-12. I hope to have a definitive date and time on that shortly. Stay tuned.

Those of you unable to make it to Jackson Hole, Wyoming and Grand Teton National Park in September can still purchase a copy of "In Nature's Realm, The Art of Douglas Allen" online through Etsy.

"In Nature's Realm," the painting (13" x 18", oil on panel), will be available for purchase at the Western Visions® Art Exhibition in September. I hope to see you there!

The Bear Hunt (1959)
Oil on board, 23 5/8 x 17 1/8"
Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Allen

In 1959, I caught my big break. OUTDOOR LIFE magazine was looking for an artist to illustrate a 20-part series on "The Big Game Animals of North America," written by noted outdoorsman, hunter and author Jack O'Connor. About a half-dozen artists, including myself, were chosen to submit a trial painting. My submission, featuring seven black bears being chased by a pack of hound dogs (pictured here), just happened to win over the editors. The monthly series subsequently became a best-selling book of the same title, and would propel my career, opening avenues into book illustration and, later, gallery exhibitions.

You can read more about the OUTDOOR LIFE series and my days as a book illustrator in my new tome, "In Nature's Realm, The Art of Douglas Allen," available in both trade ($75) and limited edition ($300) copies. FACE OFF (2004)
Oil on panel, 11 x 14”
Collection of Mr. & Mrs. Douglas Allen

Hope to see you at my official book launch and signing, tomorrow afternoon from 1-4 pm at Swain Galleries in Plainfield, NJ. Here I am holding the trade edition of “In Nature’s Realm, The Art of Douglas Allen.” Gracing the dust jacket cover is one of my all-time favorite paintings, “Face Off,” which was inspired by an agitated bison 🦬 I came across on the side of the road in Hayden Valley, Yellowstone National Park. As you can see, he wasn’t too excited about getting his picture taken on this particular day!!

For those attending tomorrow, I will be happy to take my picture with you. As an added bonus, any one who purchases either the trade ($75) or limited edition ($300) of “In Nature’s Realm” will also receive a signed print of mine. The leather-bound limited edition also includes an original drawing of mine.

For those unable to attend tomorrow, stay tuned for information on how you can purchase your copy online. …or feel free to message me here.

Merry Christmas & Happy Holidays!

HO HO HO!

Santa FedEx arrived early with the first 11 boxes of "In Nature's Realm, The Art of Douglas Allen." The sumptuous 264-page volume includes 185 original reproductions of my life's work (130 of them in full color), many of which are reproduced here for the very first time.

The book also includes a Foreword by the National Museum of Wildlife Art's Adam Duncan Harris and eight chapters co-authored by my son, Dave Allen, detailing my journey from a 10-year-old "painter of dinosaurs and neanderthal beasts" to a budding young illustrator to an established easel artist and painter of wildlife.

I can't wait to share these experiences with you.

For those of you who live in the NJ/NY metro area, please join me for a book launch party and signing at Swain Galleries in Plainfield, NJ, this Saturday, 12/14, from 1-4 pm. I will be signing both the trade ($75) and deluxe ($300) editions, the latter which includes a leather slip cover case and an original drawing of mine tipped in. For those who can’t attend but are interested in getting their hands on a signed copy, please message me here and I’ll make arrangements to get you one. Makes a terrific Christmas gift! Hope to see some of you there. Happy Holidays!!!

COMING IN DECEMBER!!

It only took 16 years, but I'm so very excited to announce the upcoming launch of my tome, "In Nature's Realm: The Art of Douglas Allen," shipping on Dec. 6th, just in time for Christmas. This sumptuous 264-page volume of my life's work spans eight decades, and includes more than 180 reproductions of my original paintings and drawings—135 in full color and many reproduced here for the very first time. "In Nature's Realm" brings to life my favorite subject matter, and devotes entire chapters to the big game animals of North America, the American Bison, and my African adventures. There's also an entire chapter on collecting the work of NC WYETH and others, and my early illustration days for Joe Weider (yes, that Joe Weider, the bodybuilding legend).

The hardcover trade edition of "In Nature's Realm" costs $75, while the signed deluxe edition—featuring an original drawing tipped into the book—is $300.

For those of you who live in the NJ/NY metro area, there will be a book launch and signing at Swain Galleries in Plainfield, NJ, on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 1-4 PM. For those who would like to purchase a copy online, please stay tuned for further ordering information. Or you can contact me here via Instant Messaging for additional ordering details.

Painting has been a passion of mine and labor of love since I was old enough to tie my own shoes. I hope you'll purchase a copy and share in this long, wonderful journey of mine. Happy Holidays!

Briar Rabbit
Oil on Panel
12 x 16

Cottontail rabbits do their best to avoid windy conditions, as this interferes with their hearing—their primary defense. I remember seeing this cottontail (below) one cold winter day, all snuggled up and sheltered under the prickly briar vines at my home in New Jersey. Can't say I didn't envy the little guy at the time, as he looked very comfortable, despite the snow and frigid temperatures.

Briar Rabbit is my latest entry in the 36th annual Western Visions Art Show & Sale, the National Museum of Wildlife Art's longest-running fundraising event. The exhibition and sale, which features more than 170 contemporary wildlife artists, runs from September 9-October 1 at the museum, located in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. The signature event and live auction is held on Thursday evening, September 14th, from 5-9:30 p.m. MST. The public sale at the museum and online begins the following day, September 15th, at 10 a.m. MST.

I've been truly blessed and honored to be a part of this show for more than 30 years. All sales from the exhibit benefit the museum, which features more than 5,000 artworks, including several by yours truly.

To view and bid on all of the works in the show, including Briar Rabbit (listed at auction at $7,500), please visit: https://www.wildlifeartevents.org
