Friends of the Folklore Society playing in Hancock this Thursday!

Expect reels, jigs, hornpipes, waltzes and some lovely songs when Sarah Bauhan
and the Elmwood Station Band play at the Hancock Summer Concert Series on August 13 at 6
p.m. at the Hancock bandstand (rain location: town hall).
Bauhan, of Hancock, has been playing flute and whistle for most of her life and has been a part
of the New England traditional music scene since her teenage days in the 1970s. Her longtime musical collaborator, Jane Orzechowski, is a 2019 recipient of the Governor’s ArtsAward and is best known for her work with Old New England and the Sugar River Band. Tim Mowry from Harrisville, on mandolin, bouzouki, and guitar, is no stranger to the bandstand, as he has played there many times with the late Steve Jones, and with Sarah and Jane and Matt Harris in many configurations. Kent Allyn rounds out the Elmwood Station Band with his bass and piano. Kent, primarily known for jazz, is a much-in-demand accompanist and studio musician, as well as a mainstay of The Ben Baldwin Big Band.
The band will be joined for some songs by Cosy Sheridan and Charlie Koch from Nelson.
The band came into existence while recording Sarah’s latest album, “Elmwood Station.” Being a train enthusiast, Sarah named her album for the former station on the east side of Hancock. “Elmwood Station” includes traditional music from Ireland, Scotland, Shetland, England, French
Canada, Sweden, New England and Appalachia, as well as original compositions that capture
the sometimes buoyant, often haunting spirit of Celtic music, and a tune or two by the late, great
Bob McQuillen, aka Mr. Mac.
The free show will run from 6 to 7:30 pm on the Hancock common. In the event of rain, it will be held downstairs in the Meetinghouse. Food and beverages, as well as baked goods, local produce and crafts, will be available at the Hancock Farmers and Artisans Market, also on the common, from 4 to 7 pm.
