On Friday, May 1, folks are calling for a day of nationwide economic action: no work, no school, no shopping. As I mentioned in my April newsletter, all our proceeds from that day after paying Dallas will go to Consejo Hispano, whose mission is to "support community well being by ensuring people can: provide for themselves and one another, build intergenerational wealth, and stay connected to our culture."
This day of action comes two days after the Supreme Court struck down the last essential pillar of the voting rights act of 1965, effectively completing the project of destroying the improvements to our democracy that our elders fought and died for generations ago. On learning of this news today, President Obama wrote, "the good news is that such setbacks can be overcome. But that will only happen if citizens across the country who cherish our democratic ideals continue to mobilize and vote in record numbers - not just in the upcoming midterms or in high profile races, but in every election and every level."
Election Day is May 19. Please make sure you're registered, make sure to vote early, and make sure that your vote is counted.
The reason for Friday's economic action is not because anyone expects that it will produce an immediate result, but because through this action--and every protest, on every street corner in every city, town and village in our nation--we the people build community, and we the people build organizing power. We are going to need that community and power if we are to build a nation that--at long last--honors the ideals enshrined in our constitution and the Declaration of Independence.
