I spotted some kestrels the other day. They were taking turns claiming the top spot on this lookout perch.

For this photo, I chose a black-and-white edit. There’s just something about it that feels so majestic to me.

I really need to start lifting some weights to hold up my lens—it’s quite heavy. 😆 This probably would have been the perfect time to pull out my heavy-duty tripod, but I didn’t want to miss the chance to capture a few shots while they were there.

I got a new hummingbird feeder, and I think it was perfect timing. 🥰

While I was out watering some of my newest trees, a hummingbird flew right up to me. For a second, I felt like Snow White—it was almost like it was asking where the food was!

Luckily, I had just mixed a fresh batch of hummingbird nectar and popped it in the fridge. I filled the feeder, hung it up, and it didn’t take long before my first visitor showed up. ❤️

You can even see the condensation on the glass because the nectar was still cold.

Now I keep an extra bottle of homemade hummingbird food in the fridge so I can refill it anytime.

I was so excited when I looked out and saw a woodpecker actually enjoying the woodpecker seed cake blend I put out the other day!

According to the Merlin Bird ID app, it's a male Red-bellied Woodpecker.

He grabbed some seeds from the cake, then flew to the top of an electrical pole to enjoy them. I think it was easier than hanging from the seed cake holder for too long to enjoy a full meal!

Ummm… I’m pretty sure I’ve mentioned I have a thing for old doors.

And apparently that also goes for windows with character.

There’s something about weathered wood, hand-forged hardware, faded paint, and the stories hidden behind them. Every door and window has witnessed moments we’ll never know—but I can’t help wondering.

These historic fort gates at Historic Old Fort Madison in Fort Madison, Iowa, frame the Mississippi River and remind me that every old doorway has a story to tell.

Once built to protect one of the earliest American frontier forts, today they welcome visitors to step back in time, explore Iowa history, and enjoy some incredible river views.

Frontier history, beautiful scenery, and another reason to slow down and explore.
