The Museum of Route 66 in Lincoln, Illinois, just recently held its grand opening. Its paying tribute to the 100th anniversary of this legendary highway.

Mark Cline may be Rockbridge County’s most important pop culture ambassador. Foamhenge was dismissed by humor-deprived local officials, but it defiantly thrives in Northern Virginia (not forgetting Bamahenge on Alabama’s Gulf Coast). And what would our Christmas parade be without the Grinch? His latest conquest of the zeitgeist is found in Lincoln, Illinois, where he was just completed the world’s largest penny, 10 feet in diameter, installed at the Route 66 Museum.

66 Man is the creation of famous Route 66 artist Jerry McClanahan. He and Mark met in Tulsa last year and discovered he was putting together a Route 66 comic book the same time Mark was. During the conversation, Mark was trying to find a way to ask him what he thought of the idea of us using each other‘s characters in each other’s comic books. About 20 minutes later, he said “hey Mark, I have an idea, what would you think about the idea of us using each other’s characters in each other’s comic books?“
Great minds, right? Mark is now a cartoon character in his comic book and Mark has used 66 men in his. Both books are on sale now in outlets on Route 66.

As I Mark was building 66 Man, it became apparent that he would be too wide to drive down the road with his arms extended. He was sent out with his arms unattached and Mark flew out to Chandler to reattach his arms in the flying position. He was erected on a pole, 4 feet off the ground to make it appear as if he is flying and lifted off position. He has a rocket Jetpack on his back. He was erected in McClanahan Park (named after Jerry) in Chandler, Oklahoma.

Renowned fiberglass sculptor, Mark Cline is a key figure at the grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony for the brand-new Museum of Route 66 in Lincoln, Illinois. Cline, the creative mastermind behind Enchanted Castle Studios, designed several of the location’s most prominent features, including the massive “World’s Largest Penny” billboard hanging on the building’s exterior.
The penny is 12-foot diameter, 16-foot tall stamped with “Route 66” and “2026”.
