Since 1992, PASACAT’s Extravaganza concerts have consistently garnered rave reviews describing PASACAT as “exuberant” and for its “smooth and well paced choreography, ” a “touring professional company…with young and fresh, skilled and well drilled dancers; the choreography as “total visual delight.” CNN International featured PASACAT on Inside Asia, February, 1996, airing in 226 countries. Footage

from the 1994 Extravaganza and interviews with the Anamaria Labao Cabato, Executive Director and Castro, drew the conclusion that Philippine dance is a “looking glass in which present generations can peer for clues to understanding themselves better.

This morning, we had the pleasure of joining designer and educator Allan Manzano for Coffee & Conversations hosted by the Mingei International Museum. His presentation entitled “Shaped Together: The Bayanihan Way of Design”explores the concept of Bayanihan (in its simplest form, meaning working together), reflecting on his cultural roots and the impact of collaborating in the community. Pictured with Allan are Karla and Eliza who first joined PASACAT in the ‘90’s and have returned as alumni dancers. As Allan shared in his presentation, we hope to continue educating and empowering the next generation of Philippine Folk dancers who will carry on PASACAT’s legacy. 🇵🇭✨

Happy Friday! PASACAT performed at the Mingei International Museum Theatre as part of Allan Manzano’s presentation in graphic design. He shared his journey in creating Dynamo Design Group and how his recent visit to the Philippines led him to give this talk on The Bayanihan Way of Design.

Allan connected PASACAT to an SDSU design class to REIMAGINE the PASACAT space. None teams of students provided potential designs and gave us a vision for the future.

PASACAT performed in Allan’s project BELONGING in which the arts posters from various contributors provided an inclusive backdrop for PASACAT dancers to bring the culture to life.

Thank you Kristi Ehrig-Burgess of the Mingei staff for a delightful “Coffee and Conversations.”

Thanks to PASACAT volunteers for participating in our local National School District’s Read Across America at Elementary School, National City. Jane Billones-Bayani at Diwata class, Anamaria Labao Cabato PASACAT-Executive Director, Divinagracia-PASACAT Board President read at 15 different classrooms and found connections to PASACAT alumni from the 1970’s, 1990’s and to current students and members.

Central highest demographic are Hispanics followed by Filipinos.

Ana read Our Nipa Hut and taught her Kindergarten, First and Third grade classes how to say “magandang umaga, po” and Mabuhay. She shared of her visit to her dad’s home when she was 7 years old, in Bulacan where she could see between the bamboo floors a kitchen with a live pig and chickens.

It was such a fun morning for Karla celebrating Read Across America with the students. She loved getting to share a story with them, including some of her very own. Their energy and excitement made it extra special. It was also such a sweet surprise running into colleagues, a few police officer acquaintances, and even a few high school friends along the way.

Jane was surprised to find out that one of the teachers has a close friend in her Bayani at Diwata classes.

This was a wonderful experience and revealed how connected we are in our village. If you’re invited to read please volunteer and support Read Across America.

Word of the day: Baso

Binasuan is a dance from Pangasinan and shows the skill of balancing glasses on the head and in the hands.

This is a gentle reminder to stay hydrated on this hot day! Cheers to Friday! 🥃✨

Malagueña de Catanauan

A treasure of Catanauan, Quezon, this Malagueña was a popular fiesta dance during the Spanish period and brought to Catanauan from nearby Marinduque. Lateral arm movements and a distinctive sway balance step are complimented by the long white manton draped over the shoulders and arms.

WEDNESDAY MOOD 🤩
At PASACAT, every Wednesday is practice day. Philippine folk dance is multifaceted, sewing together history, folklore, creativity, and mystery. ✨

Photo features “Asik,” a Maguindanaon dance shrouded in mystery. It is accompanied by the biduan chant praising the royal houses of Maguindanao. Pictured is our Sayaw I Dancers.
