There are times when an artist drops into the pocket and doesn’t even know it. Knowledge and recognition of change happening simultaneously in real time can often be difficult to label— like art, like life, like war, like death— might not transition be growth no matter what the result of the action? That seems to be what we want to teach our children, but teaching an artist is something altogether other. Teaching a soldier anything about life seems almost impossible as a civilian, like an act of hubris. Sometimes teacher and student make sense of each other.

Urging Josh Schultz on was not difficult, he is fully prepared for movement to contact.

These spray-painted stencils and vibrant, large scale works on paper reflect the former soldier’s experience. Bold, graphic depictions in vivid night vision greens, of moments of engagement with an unseen enemy, countered by the hawk and woodland creatures of Schultz’s backyard populating this landscape’s mid-battle haze and fog as rough, impulsive sculptures regenerated from the abundant ruins of Nashville’s recent ice storm.

I met Josh Schultz first as his teacher and immediately recognized something urgent in his art and something plangent in his history. Unlike many artists, Josh maneuvers a complicated balancing act; patriot and iconoclast, proud American and guilty pawn, accomplished warrior and soulful seer, he is routinely reminded of a vivid past and happy to be alive every morning. Diligent in his practice and openly seeking nature’s purity in a dirty world, Schultz unravels the frenetic and threatening instances of life and death situations.

When Alex Lockwood of Elephant Gallery offered me the use of this space for the summer my first thought was to program this solo exhibition. We open the show on National PTSD Awareness Day in honor of the men and women who protect us whether we like it or not.

Born and raised in Nashville, Josh Schultz is in his second year at Belmont University’s Watkins School of Art MFA program. He served our country in conflict in the Middle East from 200-2002. The jury is out on which tenure has been more difficult. - Scott

New works by Caroline Allison and our thoughts on why we haven't shown more photography over the years.

We've never shown much traditional photography at the gallery. It’s a medium that was traditionally separated from the rest, whether at auction, art fair, or at dedicated photo galleries. Perhaps we suffered from a common bias in the contemporary collecting world, as described by historian Juliet Hacking:

With photography considered a latecomer to the art world, many dealers encounter the negative perception of art photography as an investment on an almost daily basis and have spent a great deal of time explaining the market to sceptics.

This misconception has completely fallen away thanks to the spellbinding work of Caroline Allison. Whether the piece is editioned or unique, she aligns with our painters and sculptors in concept and ex*****on. This is especially true of the unique three-dimensional pieces in her Book of Hours series, which critic Laura Hutson Hunter writes “challenges the formal boundaries that separate painting, photography and sculpture.”

We’re not alone. Artnet has just reported on “the growing appetite for unique photographs” noting

[It] reflects a broader realignment—one in which photography is no longer evaluated on its own terms, against the logic of the edition, but against the standards of the painting and sculpture market: scale, singularity, and what Wenniger called “wall power.” (Why the Photo Market Is Moving Closer to Painting, With Unique Works Leading the Way, Artnet, April 9 2026)
Yes, it’s really just paper…

Allison’s works are shaped paper hanging from copper rings affixed with archival hinging tape. No substrate. Surprisingly light. Both delicate and resilient. If defies your expectations. The cotton matte surface echoing the softness of the clouds at sunrise.

The very first piece stemmed from her own deeply personal reflection on a powerful event in her life. and it spawned the series named for the Medieval devotional book that guided lay people through daily meditation or prayer.

For her ZieherSmith solo debut, Yanira Vissepo presents a new body of paintings that are as much built as they are painted. Continuing her process of staining raw canvas, Vissepo layers shimmering gradients with collaged linocut-printed black linen cutouts, creating works that hover between construction and improvisation. While rooted in metaphorical reflections on her personal journey from Puerto Rico to Nashville to Japan, these dreamy hybrids of landscape and still life invite meditation on transition -- embracing change as a site of transformation and healing.

It cannot be often that a work of art post-dates its title, but if curating is a creative act, this exhibition's title came first. The container of poetry, for this poet, its vessel, should be just that-- an enormous box ship filled to a wobbly, brimming meniscus of 24,000 truck-sized intermodal containers (a technique called containerization). Watch one at sea sometime, you'll never mail a package again.
