Workers who renovated McMurray Middle School last year and are still seeking $43,000 owed for their work showed up at a school board meeting on November 12, 2019, along with supporters, to make public comment to the MNPS administration who have not listened with the workers after multiple attempts to resolve the situation of their claims of unpaid work. With a brief rally outside before hand, and many people holding signs during the meeting, multiple workers gave comment in hopes the message is received. While subcontractors made personal sacrifices to ensure their workers received pay, they never received payment from Orion Building Corporation, which MNPS hired regardless of a history of not paying workers in a construction project at Vanderbilt Divinity school.
They urged the board to:
1) Make sure all construction workers and subcontractors on MNPS projects be fully paid for their labor.
2) Hold general contractor Orion Building Corporation morally responsible for all laborers on their projects with MNPS.
3) Only enter into contracts with general contractors that use Surety Bonds or similar mechanisms that guarantee that everyone who works to improve our schools are fully paid. This should never have happened, and it can be avoided in the future with this simple action.
