Man two bigger characters you will never find. This is one of the only pictures we managed to sneak in while recording “Small Town Talk” in December of 2007. Bobby and I became instant friends when I recorded Tennessee Blues for “Geronimo”. Wish Nails who is a saint and an angel had given Bobby a demo I’d done of the song in advance of cutting it for the album. Mac and I made “Small Town Talk” four years later at Dockside Studios in Maurice, LA.

“The inspiration for Small Town Talk came from the self-titled album Charles recorded in Woodstock with The Band, which was released by Bearsville Records in 1972. McNally’s love for that record led her to tell Charles she wanted to revisit it.
“Those songs oriented me musically,” says McNally. “I had so devoured everything The Band did that finding Bobby was almost a relief. That crowd of musicians had a way of making music that got under my skin in a nagging kind of way.” - Offbeat Magazine

I live a spiritual life. Being an incredibly sensitive person I don’t really have a choice.
I feel everything. Sometimes I think I feel too much and too deeply but I don’t know if that’s possible, the universe is a dynamic entity which we are both part of and the whole of. The life of an empath is not easy. We come to this life and planet to learn and empathy is a great teacher but man it takes a lot of trial and error to come to come peace within. Not to mention a lot of self forgiveness and self love. I’ve never had a standard definition of success. The things that bring me personal pleasure and satisfaction tend to be nuanced and subtle. I like a specific kind of detail but simultaneously look at the big picture. For instance, I’ve never seen a small show as anything other than a part of a whole sky of music. There is always a positive take away from even the worst of shows that make me happy to be alive and singing. Once in a while I think about fame and fortune for their own sake maybe with a bit of envy of the team work that goes into a very successful entertainment career. To break through a lot of people have to decide that you’re worth it. To be an empath in public life is a tightrope walk every minute. June 19th New Orleans I’ll be at Chickie Wah Wah come join me for some strong song and love.

Some days it occurs to me just how long I’ve been out here circling the country playing shows. I can feel it in my body. So many memories everywhere I go. I’ve become that musician I set out to be. I’ve met and working with many of the people I admired and followed into the circus. There are so many songs left to write. So many left to sing. If I win the lottery tomorrow I’d just record the many albums in my head. At each transition it always feels like I’m reeling out of control until things settle in and I realize everything is right on track and cruising to where it is all meant to go. The chaos can be thick like Irish fog. The hues and colors of my voice get subtler and richer. I enjoy singing more and more. Gratitude. I am brimming over with gratitude that I get to be a singer in this life. How did I get so lucky ?

I was moved to tears walking through the brand new Bruce Springsteen Center For American Music. Bruce was and remains, of course larger than life where I come from. His grounded approach to the explosive performance of songs that live forever has played about as much of a role in my understanding of songwriting and music as the Atlantic Ocean shaped my mermaid soul. This center was nine years in the making. Congratulations to everyone responsible for it. Truly outstanding. I feel electrocuted, it made my hands tingle and my heart pound. I sang with Bruce once for the 25th Anniversary of Music Cares Celebration of Bob Dylan. We sang Knocking On Heaven’s Door. I remember him walking on stage at show time. When the music started his energy came on like the shuttle launching from Cape Canaveral. I remember the magnitude of it took me so by surprise that for a split second I forgot to sing. He’s a force of nature and this center is something to see…and feel.
