Your message is. đź‘€

Yet another marketing effort has failed.
..most of the time it's not you or your product.

It's your MESSAGE.

Messages that break these 4 Rules get ignored.

Rule #3: Make it memorable & repeatable.

There are 4 Rules of Messaging...
.. and these 4 rules cause people to pay attention to your brand.

Rule #1: make it ZERO cognitive load.

In other words: Don’t make people think.

Here’s an example from an auto repair shop:

❌ High cognitive load: “Full-service automotive diagnostic and repair solutions.”

✅ Low cognitive load: “We’ll fix your car right the first time.”

Print your website on a sheet of paper.

Circle every place you use vague language, insider language, or words that have nothing to do with the problem your customer is trying to solve.

Then replace them with plain language the customer understands instantly.

You need to get your curiosity soundbites right.

What does this mean? ⬇️

Most small businesses make this mistake.

They start with high cognitive load statements.

These fail to pique anybody’s curiosity.

The curiosity phase of your messaging campaign involves short, simple, soundbites that explain how your product helps people survive.

Why?

Because the only thing the human brain pays attention to is survival.

This is Rule #2 of the 4 Rules of Messaging.

If you don’t have words on your website that explain how you will help somebody survive, they will bounce.

Get your curiosity soundbites right and everything else gets easier.

Say it the same way every time. 🎯

Even if you're bored of it.

By the time YOU are sick of your message...

Your customer is just starting to notice it.

You see your tagline 1,000 times.

Your customer sees it once. Maybe twice, if you're lucky.

Changing your message every month doesn't make you fresh.

It makes you forgettable.

Coca-Cola didn't get famous for "Open Happiness" this year.

They got famous for saying basically the same thing, the same way, for decades.

Repetition isn't lazy.

Your customer's brain is just starting to build the muscle memory to repeat your message.

The line you're tired of?

That's usually the one that's finally starting to work.

Consistency isn't boring.

It's how messages survive long enough to spread.

That’s rule #3 of the 4 Rules of Messaging.

Most of us have launched marketing campaigns that flopped, and it's a discouraging feeling, especially when you know your product deserves better.

It’s like tearing open a beautifully wrapped Christmas present only to find the box empty.

All that anticipation, gone in a second.

So, why do so many campaigns fail?

Usually because we never stopped to figure out the foundational message all that marketing was supposed to broadcast.

It’s not you.

It’s not your product.

It’s your MESSAGE.

Before you spend another dollar talking about your product, you need to master the 4 Rules of Messaging.

These 4 Rules help clarify your message so your customer knows exactly how you solve their problem.

“Shouldn’t” and “won’t.”

What in the world does this mean? ⬇️

If you have a product that solves a problem, here’s what you want to say:

“You SHOULDN’T have to struggle with X, and when you buy my product, you WON’T.”

Use that in your product descriptions, the headers on your website, the back of your business card, your elevator pitch, in your marketing materials.

Nobody SHOULD have to struggle with X, and because we created Y, they WON’T have to.

The two words “shouldn’t” and “won’t” will grow your business because it reframes your business as a mission.

Most people blow their message and get ignored.

If you want you and your products to get the attention you deserve...

There are the 4 Rules of Messaging you need to follow.

Rule #4: Make the Customer the Hero.

Your message should not be about you.

It should be about your CUSTOMER.

They are the hero of their own story, and you are the guide who helps them win.

Insecure brands talk at their customers, mostly about how great they are.

Confident brands talk with their customers, mostly about how they exist to solve their customers’ problems.

Here's an example:

❌ “Experience our historic property, architecture, and four-star kitchen.”

✅ “Unwind, sleep well, and wake up in a place you love.”
