For Nashville Design Week’s 10th year, we designed the Home Grown identity around the tradition of people gathering to make something together. We were inspired by quilting bees and, in particular, the Dutch Tulip quilt by Frances Mary “Fannie” Powers, which opened up a world of pattern and textures.

Tennessee’s quilting history is much bigger than the threads we pulled on. If you want to go deeper, we encourage you to explore the work of Josie Covington, Lillian Beattie, and the quilters of the Tennessee Valley Authority. Learn more about our process and inspiration “About the Design” at calendar.nashvilledesignweek.org.

“Modern in every respect, and convenient in every particular.”

A tagline pulled from the newspaper article about the original construction of the building and the perfect quirky contrast to standard luxury residential language.

Other gems our from research:

2nd and 22nd. The shorthand address used for the store. Now a colloquial graphic element.

Historic ads. Source material for the redrawn wordmark.

Stripes and borders sourced from archival photography.

Photographs and artifacts, pulled from the Alabama Department of Archives and the Birmingham Public Library. Some shaped the identity. Some may end up as large-scale installations in the building.

Meet The Yeilding - Downtown Birmingham , a new adaptive re-use and historic preservation project in downtown Birmingham, Alabama.

Opened in 1911 as the flagship for Yeilding’s, Birmingham’s original department store. Three floors of downtown retail, then decades of vacancy. Gladstone Equity Partners is bringing this place back to life as premium loft apartments over a stunning ground-floor commercial space.

We built the identity out of the history to the space and building itself. A redrawn logo, a new illustration, a tight color palette, and a family of type, borders, and patterns that flexes from a leasing page to a painted wall.

Historic Tax Credit requirements pointed the research at the 1950s. We were able to pull inspiration from archived photos, newspaper articles and vintage advertising to build a curated identity that pulls from the past and looks to the future.

For nine years, Nashville Design Week has looked different every year. It’s been a fresh identity built from scratch to promote the week’s events, expertly guided by an incredible brand partner.
But as NDW has grown as a nonprofit, it has needed a brand to lean on during the months when the focus isn’t the week itself: a clear, elegant foundational brand to support volunteer recruitment, communications, fundraising, and organizational growth.
We’re thrilled to share that new foundation!
Nashville Design Week now has what it never had: a consistent, durable brand that carries the mission year-round. And the week itself will still get evolving themes and branding year over year, so brand partners continue to have room to explore new territory and make their mark.
We want to thank our past and current brand partners, volunteers, and most importantly, our design community for getting us to this moment.
Here’s to building on this foundation, with you.

“Someday…” has arrived.

Whenever we drove past “The Scrapyard” (which is often if you live in East Nashville), we’d say, “I want to work on whatever gets built there.”

Our wish came true when we were invited to support the naming and branding of what is now known as “The East Bend.”

The name is simple and grounded, drawn from the natural curve of the river and the geography that defines the site. A simple typographic composition echoes the bend itself, creating a sense of calm and openness.

The design is intentionally quiet and peaceful leaving plenty of room for future collaborators to contribute to the exciting future of this special property.

Massive thanks to for connecting us to this project, to David Byerley, Sam Lingo, and Matt Rigsby for their close collaboration and trust, and to Paul Clements for his brilliant historic research into the land.

The Lanes is a new neighborhood in the heart of North Nashville, designed around a wellness-oriented lifestyle.

development team includes with The Tinsley Company, , , and , with marketing and sales led by and their team of skilled agents. We helped to lead naming and brand development for the project.

The name draws from the site’s history as a former bowling alley as well as the legacy of nearby TSU track and field from the nearby area, while also reflecting the experience of the neighborhood itself.

The visual identity takes a clean, contemporary approach. Neutral colors, open space, and subtle textures and shadows create an identity that feels calm, modern, and welcoming.
