Before and After: would these dents make the headjoint play differently? Maybe. But, taking those dents out has a psychological effect. I have found that when students get their instrument back and the dents and cosmetic issues have been addressed, within reason, they tend to take better care of the instrument.

Before and After: a wonderful platinum plated Muramatsu in the shop for a spa day. There were several ripped pads that were replaced, and then a full cleaning, oiling the mechanism, and adjusting for proper key action upon reassembly. Polishing? Nope, that's the beautiful thing about platinum plating. It doesn't typically tarnish.

Before and After: a very large Wessex tuba in for a cleaning and dent work. I think it cleaned up well. Being it doesn't have any lacquer, I add an additional stage to the cleaning. I use a copper polish to help even out the color of the base metal whether it be brass or nickel.

Before and After: the customer messaged me saying the D # key was not moving well for about a week, and all of a sudden it worked today. I suggested to go ahead and bring it to me, "just in case". Glad they agreed to it. It took some scraping to remove the old solder and whatever was used to repair it the first time. I got everything aligned and completed the soldering. Now the key works wonderfully! This is a reminder to players of all instruments. If something isn't working right, it just doesn't miraculously go away. There is a reason.

A very nice Phillip Hammig piccolo in for a COA. I did take a before photo, but you really couldn't tell it from the after photo. It's the first time in my shop, but the owner has definitely kept on top of its maintenance. All wood piccolos in my shop get taken completely apart, all the way down to just the wood. I then soak the wood in a high grade bore oil to rehydrate the fibers of the wood. I also inspect the tone holes and address any potential leaks due to the grain of the wood. I hope the owner is happy with the results.

Before and After: flute players please understand that if you leave your flute out on a stand for ease of practicing, tarnish will happen quicker than in the case. Especially if you love to cook onions and or garlic! I opened this case up to start the estimation process and was hit in the nose with the smell garlic. Onions and garlic release sulfides into the air and cause tarnish to form quicker. There are slip-on covers that you can order from flute specialty shops that have anti tarnish treatment to the fabric. Those can help prevent tarnish from happening so quickly. But remember, your flute is always safer in the case.

Before and After: a stunning gold plated Pearl Maesta flute in for a Straubinger conversion overhaul. Not all flutes are capable to make the change from traditional felt pads to engineered pads like a Straubinger. Not only do the toneholes have to be perfectly flat, but the keywork needs to be perfectly fit to the body. And distortion in the tonehole surface or looseness in the keywork will prevent the engineered pad from sealing, thus rendering the flute unplayable. I hope the owner is happy with the results.

Before and After: a very well loved Pearl Eleganté came into the shop for its first COA in about 3 years. The pads were dirty and the mechanism was furry from lint and oil mixing. After a good cleaning and polishing, it's all ready to make wonderful music again.
