The issue wasn’t ever about $15 iced lattes or $10 avocado toast.

Those were merely distractions.

The real problem lies in $4,000 monthly salaries in cities where rent alone is $3,000.

This creates a precarious situation where an unexpected car repair or medical bill can easily derail months of careful budgeting.

Then “just spend less” overlooks the fact that essential living costs have become luxuries.

Rather than blaming coffee, let’s focus on examining the wage-to-housing ratio.

$100k in 1996 bought a life. In 2026, it barely buys you breathing room.

The same amount, yet a completely different reality. Back then, that salary meant a house two cars good schools a summer holiday and one parent could stay home if the family desired.

By 2026, it translates to splitting rent praying your raise outpaces inflation and feeling “middle class” on paper while struggling to make ends meet each month.

This is why chasing a number isn’t the same as building wealth.

Income without ownership assets or a plan simply gets eaten up by the cost of living. If your goal is $100k, raise it.

The real goal is building something inflation can’t quietly steal from you.
