The Naples Community Orchestra- NCO The Naples Community Orchestra is a community organization providing classical and popular music.

The 2021 season of the Naples Community Orchestra will bring a treasure of string literature to our community. Our soloists will include Emerson Millar, Priscila Navarro, and Stella Chen. Under the artistic leadership of Max Rabinovitsj, this season our Chamber Orchestra will perform works by Vivaldi, Bach, Mozart, Gershwin, and Strauss. We hope to see you at our season opener on February 20th at Moorings Presbyterian Church.

It takes more than musicians to run our little orchestra.

Every concert, there's a small crew of people making it happen who never touch an instrument — greeting you at the door, pointing you to your seat, keeping the reception running, making sure there's no line at the box office at 2:55. None of it shows up in the program notes. None of it happens without them, either.

We're looking for a few more people to do exactly this — Front of House volunteers for concert day: ushers, greeters, box office, reception, parking. No experience necessary for most roles, and the time commitment can be as small as a few hours per concert. There are many other roles as well.

New series: SUNDAY SERENADE. Every week (or so), we're pulling something out of the NCO archives worth a second listen — a favorite passage, a great collaborator, a performance we're still thinking about.

First up: pianist Aristo Sham and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2.

There's a good story behind this piece. Rachmaninoff's First Symphony premiered in 1897 to reviews so brutal — one critic said if there were a conservatory in Hell, its star student would write something like it — that he didn't compose again for three years. What got him writing again wasn't willpower. It was a doctor named Nikolai Dahl, who treated him daily for months with little more than hypnosis and the repeated suggestion: you will write a concerto, and it will be excellent. Rachmaninoff dedicated the finished piece to him. The 1901 premiere was a triumph.

Aristo brought that same conviction to our stage. Keep an eye on this name — there's more to say about him soon.

NCO is a hybrid orchestra — professional section leaders alongside serious, high-caliber volunteer and student musicians. If you've got the training and the discipline to bring it, this is your invitation.

🎻 The violinist who commissioned Barber's Violin Concerto never actually played it. Risa Hokamura will.

Barber wrote the piece in 1939 for the violinist who'd paid for it — but when the fiery, technically demanding finale arrived, the two disagreed over whether it worked, and a Curtis Institute student ended up proving the movement was playable before the concerto's official premiere ever happened. Nearly a century later, it's one of the most performed American violin concertos ever written. Fittingly for a piece so tied to American identity, Barber himself grew up on Pennsylvania farmland — not far, in spirit, from the rolling countryside you'll see in the image above.

Risa Hokamura started violin at age three. By seventeen, she'd already won the Silver Medal at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis — performing the Tchaikovsky Concerto with the Indianapolis Symphony under Leonard Slatkin — and First Prize at the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the same year.
