The transient of a snare drum lasts between 1 and 10 milliseconds (ms). For a guitar it can be 10 to 40 ms. For a vocal, it’s anywhere between 1 and 50 ms. Knowing the duration of the transients in a recording can help you dial in more effective compression settings to create impact, depth, added dimensionality, or control to your mixes.
