The property includes two large galleries, a sculpture meadow, a 35-acre lake aptly named "Winery

Lake," and a wildlife preserve. In addition to changing exhibitions of contemporary art, year-round programs include artist talks, nature hikes, docent and school tours, Spanish-language tours, and special performances.

When Squeak Carnwath was the shop master in the ceramics department at CCA, she mixed a glaze recipe incorrectly, and a number of her students' cups came out a greenish "mucus-y" color. Some of the students were disappointed and threw the cups away. Carnwath, however, saw potential and retrieved the cups from the trash. She incorporated them, along with cups she made herself, onto multiple artworks, including “Cup Form”. At this early stage in her career, Carnwath was exploring the idea of humans as vessels or containers of cultural events.

Watch your head! Art conservator Justin Wyckoff prepares to reattach the “head” of Robert Hudson’s Figure of Speech, 1984. The piece has kinetic elements which sometimes collide in the wind causing damage to the paint.

Three of the smaller elements, including the "head", were detached and brought to an indoor studio where Justin began by carefully stripping the failed yellow coating from the artwork.

Then he mechanically removed various rusted areas down to the bare metal substrate before priming with an epoxy primer and repainting with a compatible paint system.

Finally, each element (and eventually the main torso of the sculpture) was given three applications of a diamond finish UV-protective satin clear coat so that the colors will remain bright and saturated for many seasons to come.

DOME STORY 1: The Dome Alligator

The Dome, a live-work project founded by Peter Voulkos, was home to many artists for the past 50 years and even, to one very special alligator!
