✨ Women of Gee’s Bend Doll Making at Carneros Studios ✨
On Monday, we had the honor of welcoming Betty Anderson — founder of the Camden Shoe Shop & Quilt Museum in Gee’s Bend, Alabama — for a special one-day workshop in partnership with Black Belt Treasures Cultural Arts Center.
Betty shared the incredible legacy of the women of Gee’s Bend, whose artistry and resilience have inspired generations. Using vibrant fabrics, textures, and handcrafting techniques, participants created their own heritage dolls — each one telling a unique story through its colors, patterns, and details.
From hand-stitched skirts to tiny hats and accessories, every doll reflected the spirit of creativity, history, and community connection that Gee’s Bend is known for.
A huge thank you to Betty for not only guiding us through the art of doll making but also sharing her personal journey and the rich cultural traditions of Wilcox County.
🧵 Honoring heritage, one stitch at a time.
