Approaching Pilot

Circa 1895

In 1871, Marshall Johnson was a sailor aboard a ship that burned at sea. He was one of only 12 survivors to be rescued. By 1900 he had a studio in Boston and his works of working ships became very popular

Pilot boats were sail powered and very nimble to reach incoming vessels quickly
