Artist Spotlight: We highlight a different (non-music) artist every other Monday. We hope you enjoy their work as much as we do!
Next up: Piney Woods Mystic
Here’s a little introduction and Q&A with the artist!
Piney Woods Mystic is run by Danielle Coleson. In her words, “I’m an artist and craftsperson who works in several different mediums, including laser engraved custom gifts, mobiles and sun catchers, fiber arts, beading, bone & insect taxidermy, painting, T-shirts, and graphic design. My work is heavily influenced by nature, astrology, and mysticism. It’s also important to me to create pieces that celebrate LGBTQIA+ identity, female empowerment, and equality. I’m constantly trying to add more in those themes to promote visibility and celebrate the unique intersectionality of our identities.”
How long have you been creating?
I’ve been creating for as long as I can remember. Professionally, I worked in graphic design for almost two decades before starting Piney Woods Mystic, with the majority of that time as the shirt designer at Fredonia Graphics. I opened Piney Woods Mystic as a side project in 2020, and left Fredonia Graphics to go full time with PWM in 2022.
What is your favorite medium?
That’s a tough one for me, because I’m always trying something new. If a medium piques my interest, there’s a good chance I’m going to try it at some point. Some of my favorite pieces involve prisms and rainbows; butterflies, bones, and antique porcelain dolls; or hand embroidery.
How do you approach the beginning of a new piece?
I kind of go through three main phases… First is a period of rest and internalization where it’s all in my head and I’m turning it over to get a sense of what I want. Then the supply and resource phase where I’m getting my hands on everything I think I might need and doing a deep dive into researching subjects, techniques, and materials that I may not be familiar with. Finally the last phase is the actual creating, usually without much physical planning out - just going off the jumble of info I’ve amassed in my head. I just kinda sit down and start trying different things until I like what I see. If I get stuck, I’ll stop for a bit and go back to one of the previous phases or switch over to another project for a while, but mostly the creating phase is a flurry of trial and error and success. Sometimes there’s weeks between one phase and the next, sometimes they all happen in just a few days. At any given time I probably have five to ten projects in one of those first two phases waiting for the right energy and inspiration to come to fruition.
