Who inspired you to start metal detecting?

For me, there were so many influences along the way.

🏴‍☠️ Watching “Treasure Island” and hearing tales of pirates, buried treasure, and gold sparked my imagination as a kid.

📖 In the 1990s, I started reading Western & Eastern Treasures magazine. The stories in those pages showed me that treasure hunting wasn’t just something from movies—it was real, and ordinary people were making incredible finds.

💎 “Today’s the day!” Those famous words from Mel Fisher taught me that persistence, hard work, and never giving up can eventually lead to amazing discoveries.

🌊 And then there was “The Undersea World of Jacques Cousteau”. It opened my eyes to a hidden world full of adventure and wonder. In fact, Cousteau inspired me to learn SCUBA diving so I could explore that world for myself.

Looking back, all of these influences helped shape my love of history, adventure, and treasure hunting.

For more information on the Grand Rapids Savings Bank:

Constructed in 1916 by architects Osgood & Osgood, it served as a major financial anchor for the city before closing during the financial crises of the 1930s.

The building located on Monroe Center, the 13-story Classical Revival structure is now known as the People's Building.

Two quick hunts in one day! 😊

🏠 First Hunt:
A late 1800s / early 1900s homesite that I just keep going back to. The finds are definitely getting tougher, but this place still keeps giving up little pieces of history!

Notable finds:
• What I believe is part of a pocket watch case
• A damaged silver ring 👍🏼

Funny thing about the ring — it originally went straight into my junk pouch because I thought it was a pull tab! Once I got home and took a closer look, I noticed it was marked “925.” 😮

Just goes to show… always double check your finds!

🏫 Second Hunt:
An old early 1900s school that’s currently being renovated into housing. Soon it’ll be private property, so I wanted to give it one last shot.

Best find there was a Ball jar lid with the glass still intact. I also found one lonely modern penny… which honestly surprised me. I expected a lot more coins at this site!

No complaints though — found a few cool items and enjoyed some time outside. That’s always a win in my book! 😊
