I knitted my very first chunky knit blanket in December 2024. 💕

It was a project I had in mind for years, but I felt intimidated by the process. Finally, I decided I was going to learn how to knit.

It was a cold, winter night in Southeast Alaska, and I felt a strong desire to learn this new skill. First, I started with a chunky blanket, and then I ventured into cute little bear hats.

Anytime I was knitting, I felt this sense of calm and warmth wash over me. My mind started to relax, and the racing thoughts slowed down. It felt like my ancestors were guiding me.

In the years following, people asked me if I could teach them how to knit chunky blankets, too.

Chunky knitting and this little idea all fell into place. You know how they say when something is aligned, everything just falls into place?

Well, that's what happened with Chunky Knit Party.

I love what I do. I get an opportunity to share this ancient art and mindfulness practice with the community. I have taught over 100 people how to knit chunky blankets, and I am so grateful. I am deeply honored to share these experiences and skills with others from Alaska and now in Kentucky.

Things chunky knitting has taught me:

1. You can learn something completely new as an adult.
2. Slowing down is underrated.
3. When your body starts telling you it’s tired, it’s probably a good idea to listen.
4. Things feel a little easier when I quiet my mind and speak kindly to myself.
5. It’s okay to take a break. The blanket will still be there when I get back. 😆

I think that’s one of the things I love most about chunky knitting. You start out thinking you’re just making a blanket, and somewhere along the way, you end up learning a little something about yourself, too. 🤍
