This week’s Historic Downtown Murray business spotlight Is: Wright Costume!

Downtown Murray is changing — but some of its most important stories are still being written. ❤️

If you’ve spent much time in Murray, chances are you know the Wright name.

For more than five decades, Susan and Bill Wright and their family have been part of the fabric of downtown Murray — through dance, costumes, the arts, historic preservation and local business.

Susan opened the Ballet Centre in Murray in 1970, and the family went on to operate Wright Costume & Dancewear and the Murray Arts Centre. They also invested in preserving pieces of Murray’s history, including restoring the Murray Mansion and Murray Chapel.

And Wright Costume has become a Murray institution of its own.

Founded in 1979, generations of families, dancers, schools, theater productions and community organizations have turned to the Wrights for costumes, dancewear and a little bit of magic when they needed it.

As downtown Murray enters another chapter of redevelopment, the State Street building long associated with Wright Costume is part of an area acquired by Murray City for redevelopment.

But that is not the end of the Wright Costume story.

Susan Wright and the Wright family are still here. Wright Costume is still actively operating in downtown Murray, carrying forward a family business and legacy that has been part of this community for decades.

That distinction matters.

Buildings change. Downtowns evolve. But the people and businesses that helped create the identity of a downtown deserve to have their stories remembered — and, whenever possible, supported as they move into the next chapter.

Thank you to Susan and the entire Wright family for the decades you have invested in Murray, its arts, its history and its downtown.
