MUSTANGS ROLL IN OPENER
McCracken County breezed to a 6-0 win over Bowling Green yesterday in the opening round of the KHSAA State Baseball Tournament at Legends Field in Lexington. Caden Kern pitched the complete game shutout and helped his cause with a triple and 2 RBIs. The Mustangs improved to 32-8 and will play Sayre at 9 am tomorrow after the Spartans rolled Johnson Central 13-4.

In other games yesterday, Boyd County defeated South Oldham 5-1, and 2nd Region champion University Heights smashed Wolfe County 9-1. In today's games, Campbell County battles LaRue County at 9, Apollo faces Whitley County at 12:30, Trinity takes on Bullitt East at 4, West Jessamine takes on Beechwood in the 7:30 nightcap. BOMBERS BEGIN STATE JOURNEY
The KHSAA State Softball Tournament continues today at John Cropp Stadium in Lexington. Region 1 champion Ballard Memorial will play at noon against Hazard. The Bombers are 24-14 after winning 14 of their last 16 games while the Lady Bulldogs bring a 23-12 record into the tournament. Region 2 champion Henderson County plays Pulaski County at 4 pm today. In other games today, Bullitt East faces Assumption at 9 am and Ashland Blazer battles George Rogers Clark at 7 pm.

In yesterday's opening round games, Highlands blanked South Laurel 3-0, North Hardin edged Apollo 4-3, Madison Central bested Lawrence County 7-1, and South Warren crushed Oldham County 12-0. All times are CDT.

ADAMS NAMED VOLLEYBALL COACH
Calloway County High School has named former Lady Lakers standout Gracie Adams as its new head volleyball coach after coaching the middle school program last year. She succeeds Gracee Murphy. Adams told the Murray Ledger and Times that Murphy encouraged her to consider the position, and she hopes to build on the program’s recent success while serving as a positive role model for players.

ANOTHER GIFT FOR MSU ATHLETICS
Murray State Athletics has received a $125,000 gift from Drs. Bob and Joyce Hughes to support the Vision for Excellence Fund through the Leading the Pack capital campaign. The donation will help fund strategic initiatives, facility improvements, and revenue-sharing efforts within the athletics department. The gift adds to Murray State's recent fundraising success, as the university has raised a record $43 million over the past two years for facilities, programs, and championship resources.

TEXAS CLAIMS WCWC TITLE
Texas beat Texas Tech 4-1 to win its second straight Women's College World Series softball title. Kayden Henry went two-for-four with a home run to lead the Longhorns. Citlaly Gutierrez allowed a run in four-and-a-third innings to earn the win before Teagan Kavan struck out five of the six batters she faced to lock down the save. Kavan was named the Most Outstanding Player of the WCWS, becoming the first person to win the award twice.

SUPER REGIONALS BEGIN
College baseball Super Regionals begin today, and OVC Champion Little Rock will play against fellow Trojans in the Troy Super Regional. Departing Little Rock is the first OVC team to advance to a Super Regional since Tennessee Tech in 2018. Game one of the Trojans vs Trojans matchup airs at 4 pm today on ESPNU with tomorrow's 2 pm game airing on ESPN2. A third game will be played Sunday at a time to be determined. Seven SEC teams are playing in Super Regionals with Auburn, Georgia, Texas, and Alabama hosting.

OL COMMITS TO VANDY
The Vanderbilt football team landed a commitment on Thursday. Four-star offensive lineman Jasper Ngokwere announced his pledge to the Commodores. The Richardson, Texas native chose Vandy over offers from Texas and Texas Tech, among others.

VOLS FIRE REYNOLDS
The Tennessee baseball team parted ways with one of its coaches. The Vols fired pitching coach Josh Reynolds after just one season on the job. Reynolds was promoted from Director of Pitching Performance, a role in which he spent one season with UT.

CARDINALS REPORT
The St. Louis Cardinals continue their homestand when they begin a series against the Cincinnati Reds at Busch Stadium tonight. The Cardinals just dropped two of three against the Texas Rangers earlier in the week and enter the weekend in third place in the NL Central at 32-28. The Cardinals send Kyle Leahy to the mound for the 7:15 game with a 6:20 pregame show airtime on WNBS.

JUDGE INJURED
The Yankees announced yesterday that outfielder Aaron Judge was diagnosed with a stress fracture of the first rib on his right side. Judge will undergo imaging in about four to six weeks to determine his level of healing, but the expectation is for him to return this season. The 34-year-old also sustained a stress fracture in one of his right ribs prior to the 2020 season.

NBA PLAYOFFS
The NBA Finals are back tonight as the Knicks and Spurs square off in San Antonio for Game Two in the best-of-seven series. New York took an early lead after clawing back from a 14-point deficit to stun the Western Conference champions with a comeback win. The Knicks have won a dozen playoff games in-a-row while the Spurs hope Victor Wembanyama can bounce back from a poor performance in Game One.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS
The Stanley Cup Final is even following the first two games of the series. The Carolina Hurricanes put together a thrilling comeback to erase a late two-goal deficit and Seth Jarvis lit the lamp early in overtime to help them take down the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 in Game Two. Mark Jankowski, Jordan Staal and Logan Stankoven also scored for Carolina. The best-of-seven series is now tied 1-1 heading to Sin City. Brett Howden scored twice and Mark Stone also found the back of the net for Vegas. The Golden Knights host the Hurricanes for Game Three on Saturday.

AREA HOCKEY REPORT
The St. Louis Blues are bringing back a pair of players. The team signed forwards Zach Dean and Dylan Peterson to one-year, two-way extensions yesterday. Dean has not played at the NHL level since 2023-24, while Peterson has yet to play a game past the AHL.

Some tickets for the next Run for the Roses are now on sale. As of yesterday, two-day general admission infield tickets can be purchased, as well as two-day, all-inclusive tickets for the Homestretch Club, Starting Gate Courtyard and Ford First Turn. SOCCER TEAMS BEGIN ARRIVING
Soccer fans in Chattanooga are on high alert. The Spanish national team arrives today ahead of its training camp for the upcoming World Cup. Fans are being told to line up outside the Embassy Suites and give the team a warm welcome. The Spanish team has several training events lined up where the public will be able to see the squad prepare for the World Cup, which is being held in the U.S., Canada and Mexico later this month.

The Memphis Redbirds shut out the Louisville Bats 1-0 at home. The Nashville Sounds scored six runs in the third inning to beat the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 8-3 on the road. STATE TOURNEYS BEGIN TODAY
The KHSAA State baseball and softball tournaments begin today. The KHSAA State Baseball Tournament presented by UK Healthcare, will be played at Legends Field in Lexington. First round games today include 31-8 McCracken County facing 34-5 Bowling Green at 12:30 CDT today following the 9 am game between South Oldham and Boyd County.

In the late session, 2nd Region champion University Heights plays Wolfe County at 4, followed by Sayre and Johnson Central at 7:30. Four more first round games will be played tomorrow.

The KHSAA State Softball Tournament presented by UK Healthcare also begins today and is being played at John Cropp Stadium in Lexington. South Laurel and Highlands play the 9 am opener followed by the noon game between North Hardin and Apollo. The late games find Lawrence County facing Madison Central at 4, with the Oldham County vs South Warren game at 7 concluding the night.

Region 1 champion Ballard Memorial will play at noon tomorrow against Hazard while Region 2 champion Henderson County plays Pulaski County at 4 pm. All times listed are CDT.

WCWS SOFTBALL RECAP
Texas beat Texas Tech 7-3 in game one of the Women's College World Series championship series. Katie Stewart hit a two-run home run as part of a five-run first inning for the Longhorns. Mia Williams and Mihyia Davis each homered for the Red Raiders in the loss. Game two will be played tonight in Oklahoma City.

WIU NAMES INTERIM AD
Western Illinois University named Shelby Borchardt as interim director of Intercollegiate Athletics following Paul Bubb’s departure on Wednesday. Borchardt was serving as the associate athletic director for Internal Operations/Senior Woman Administrator and has worked at the university since 2015. Bubb is a former Assistant Director of Athletics at Murray State University. WIU officials did not disclose the reason for Bubb’s departure.

CARDINALS REPORT
The St. Louis Cardinals salvaged their series against the Texas Rangers with a 5-3 win last night at Busch Stadium. Alec Burleson drove in three runs while Jordan Walker finished with three base hits. Andre Pallante earned his sixth win after allowing one run on three hits in 5 2/3 innings. For Texas, Joc Pederson had two RBIs, and MacKenzie Gore was charged with his fifth loss. The 32-28 Cardinals are off today and begin a three-game home series with Cincinnati tomorrow night.

In other team news, the Cardinals sent Matt Pushard back to the Miami Marlins yesterday. By Rule 5 Draft regulations, he needed to stay on the Cardinals active roster all season in order to avoid being returned to Miami. The 28-year-old had a 5.14 ERA in six appearances with St. Louis this year.

NBA PLAYOFFS
In Game 1 of the NBA Finals, the Knicks erased a 14-point deficit to secure 105-95 comeback win in San Antonio. Jalen Brunson led all scorers with 30 points including 13 in the fourth quarter as the Knicks closed out the game with an 11-0 run. Victor Wembanyama struggled to 26 points on 6-of-21 shooting for San Antonio, which will try snap New York's 12-game postseason winning streak when Game Two tips off in Texas on Friday.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS
In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, Carolina will host the Vegas for Game Two tonight in Raleigh. The Golden Knights came away with a victory in the first game after trailing by two goals in the opening period. Vegas is on a seven-game winning streak while Carolina has dropped just two games so far this postseason.

The Predators have a new man leading their front office. The franchise named Chris MacFarland as its President of Hockey Operations and General Manager on Tuesday. He replaces Barry Trotz, who announced his retirement in February. MacFarland had been with the Colorado Avalanche since the 2015-16 season and was promoted to GM in 2022.

HELP COMING FOR RETIRED RACE HORCES
Churchill Downs is starting a new national initiative meant to support retired racehorses. The Gallop for Good online campaign is getting underway now. It will feature a one-day giving event on June 27th, part of Stephen Foster Day at the track. Proceeds from the effort will go to nonprofits that care for and re-home Thoroughbreds after their time in the spotlight. RACERS ADD TO ROSTER
According to multiple reports on X, Murray State men's basketball has added French point guard Talis Soulhac to its roster. The 6-foot-2 guard played professionally in France’s second division last season, averaging 12.5 points and 3.8 assists in 36 games while shooting over 40% from the field and 80% from the free-throw line. If confirmed, Soulhac would fill the Racers’ final roster spot and join three other French players on the team.

In other team news, another piece of the Racer men's basketball schedule has fallen into place according to basketball writer Alex Rosinski. Cal State Bakersfield and Murray State will play on December 14 at the Lee's Family Forum in Henderson, Nevada as part of the Jack Jones Classic. UNLV and Washington State will also play during the event.

UK COMMIT FLIPS
The Kentucky football team lost one of its class of 2027 commitments. Three-star athlete Bryian Duncan flipped his commitment from the Wildcats to West Virginia. UK now has 18 players committed and has the number 14 class in the nation, according to 247 Sports.

SOFTBALL CWS CONTINUES
The Women's College World Series championship series begins tonight in Oklahoma City. For the second straight year, Texas and Texas Tech will face off in the best-of-three series. The Longhorns beat the Red Raiders two games to one last season, claiming their first national championship in program history

COACHES UNHAPPY WITH ALLEN
Tennessee State University is reviewing concerns about its athletic department after six head coaches signed a vote of no confidence letter targeting Athletic Director Mikki Allen. The coaches, including football coach Reggie Barlow and men's basketball coach Nolan Smith, cited issues such as poor communication, lack of transparency, delayed decision-making, and declining morale within the department. TSU President Dwayne Tucker says he's taking the concerns seriously and has begun meeting with coaches and Allen to review the complaints.

MURRAY GIRLS SOCCER HIRES POLOGRUTO
The Murray Ledger and Times reports that Taylor Pologruto has been named the new head coach of the Murray High School girls soccer team. A former Lady Tigers midfielder, Pologruto returns to lead the program she helped build during a successful playing career from 2014-17. She will be joined by former teammates Olivia Butterworth and Lydia White who will serve as assistant coaches. The trio was part of a Lady Tigers team that captured the Region 1 title in 2015.

The St. Louis Cardinals allowed three runs in the top of the ninth during a 7-4 loss to the Texas Rangers at Busch Stadium. Joc Pederson delivered to go-ahead hit while Cal Quantrill earned the victory in relief as the Rangers pushed their winning streak to five. The Stanley Cup Final started with a bang. The Golden Knights outlasted the Hurricanes 5-4 in a back-and-forth Game One in Raleigh. The Canes stormed out to a two-goal lead before the Golden Knights responded with three straight. Tomas Hertl scored the go-ahead goal late in the third period. Vegas has now won seven straight playoff games. Carolina dropped just its second game of the postseason. Game Two is slated for Thursday.

NBA PLAYOFFS
The last stage in the NBA postseason is here. Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs tip off against Jalen Brunson's Knicks tonight in Game One of the Finals in San Antonio. The Spurs are trying to win their first title since 2014 while the Knicks hope to end a more than 50-year title drought. The sides clashed in the 1999 Finals where San Antonio destroyed New York in five games.

YANTKO HONORED AS TOP AD
Murray State Director of Athletics Nico Yantko has been named one of the top athletics directors in the nation by Silver Waves Media, making him the only representative from the Missouri Valley Conference on the list. University leaders credited Yantko's leadership for recent successes, including the hiring of men's basketball coach Ryan Miller, the Racers' first 20-win season in four years, increased ticket sales and revenue growth.

The recognition also comes as Murray State Athletics has raised a record $43 million toward its $100 million "Leading The Pack" fundraising campaign aimed at enhancing facilities, student-athlete support and competitive resources.

UK FALLS IN MORGANTOWN
Kentucky fell 6-5 in 10 innings to West Virginia last night in the NCAA Morgantown Regional championship game. Trailing 5-1 with just four outs remaining, Kentucky rallied dramatically behind a three-run homer from Hudson Brown and a game-tying solo shot by Ethan Hindle to force extra innings. West Virginia scored the winning run in the bottom of the 10th to advance as Kentucky finishes the season 33-23.

SOFTBALL CWS
The Tennessee softball team had its season ended on Monday. The Lady Vols lost to twice to Texas, falling 5-2 and 4-0 in the Women's College World Series semifinals in Oklahoma City. UT has not made the championship series since the 2013 season. Texas Tech took out #1 national seed Alabama 5-4 and 2-0 in their games and will face the Longhorns in the best-of-three championship series.

CATS LAND FORWARD
The Kentucky men's basketball team landed an impact transfer. Former Iowa State forward Milan Momcilovic committed to the Wildcats on Monday. Momcilovic was entered into the NBA Draft but withdrew ahead of the deadline. With the Cyclones, he averaged 16.9 points per game and shot nearly 49 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.

CARDINALS BOLSTER GRID ROSTER
The Louisville football team added to its 2027 recruiting class. Three-star athlete AJ Tillman committed to the Cardinals as a running back on Monday. Tillman chose Louisville over offers from Appalachian State and Virginia Tech, among others.

OVC SPRING MEETINGS
The Ohio Valley Conference conducted its annual Spring Meetings in Franklin, Tennessee las week. The meetings were the first under OVC Commissioner Matt Wilson who began his duties on May 18. Attendees also had a chance to discuss national issues, get updates from OVC representatives in NCAA governance, discuss future meeting cadence, and approved the championships calendar for the next academic year.

The League's annual Honors Dinner celebrated Hayden Bell (Morehead State) and Addi Brownfield (Western Illinois) as the League’s Steve Hamilton Sportsmanship Award winners while the Conference welcomed Ron Hines (Southeast Missouri), Lana Richmond (Southeast Missouri) and Dennis Taylor (UT Martin) into the OVC Hall of Fame.

MAYFIELD COACHING MOVES
Stephen Hatchell has been named the new head football coach at Mayfield High School after serving as the Cardinals' offensive coordinator for the past nine seasons. Hatchell replaces Cliff Dew, who resigned in April after leading the team to a 19-5 record over two seasons.

Meanwhile, Tom Foust has resigned as head coach of the Lady Cardinals basketball program after one season, citing a career opportunity outside coaching. In his lone season, Foust guided the team to a 14-13 record and its first 3rd District Championship in 30 years.

The St. Louis Cardinals had just five hits during a 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers last night at Busch Stadium. Jacob deGrom earned his 100th career win as the Rangers ace struck out eight and allowed just four hits in five scoreless innings. The top two teams in the NHL are ready to battle for Lord Stanley. The Carolina Hurricanes host the Vegas Golden Knights tonight for Game One of the Stanley Cup Final in Raleigh. The Hurricanes are representing the Eastern Conference after disposing of the Montreal Canadiens in five games. The Golden Knights won the Western Conference after sweeping the President's Trophy winning Colorado Avalanche. Both teams are seeking their second championship. Carolina lifted the Cup in 2006, and Vegas won it all in 2023.

The St. Louis Blues are keeping one of their goaltenders around. The team signed Will Cranley to a one-year, two-way extension yesterday. Cranley has been in the Blues organization since being drafted in 2020, but he hasn't appeared in any NHL games. He saved just over 89-percent of the shots he faced in the AHL last year.

GRIZZLIES REPORT
The Grizzlies welcomed some draft prospects for a workout on Monday. Former Arizona forward Koa Peat was joined by Malik Dia of Ole Miss, Jestin Porter of Clemson, and Latrell Wrightsell from Alabama. Peat is a projected lottery pick after he averaged 14.1 points and 5.6 rebounds per game for the Wildcats. Memphis owns picks 3, 16 and 32 in the NBA Draft.

INDIANA BEARS?
The Chicago Bears might be moving out of Chicago to Indiana. On Friday, Illinois lawmakers were unable to pass a bill aimed at keeping the Bears in the state, after months of stalled negotiations over tax credits for a new stadium. On Monday, Illinois Democrat Governor JB Pritzker said he's prepared to be the governor who loses the Bears, if it means keeping a fair playing field for taxpayers. Illinois lawmakers say they are working again on new legislation designed to help the Bears build a new stadium in what many see as a last-ditch effort.

RACERS ADD GEORGIA TECH
Murray State men's basketball will take on Georgia Tech on December 6 in a non-conference matchup at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. The game is part of a doubleheader that also features Tennessee and North Carolina State. The game will mark the first meeting between the programs since 1956, with the all-time series tied 1-1. Tickets go on sale to the public on Friday.

RACERS CONCLUDE TRACK SEASON
Three members of the Murray State women’s track and field team concluded their season this weekend at the NCAA East First Round in Lexington. Cheyenne Melvin led the Racers with a personal-best time of 2:04.28 in the 800 meters, advancing to the quarterfinals before finishing her season with a time of 2:07.55. Serena Blackwood placed 42nd overall in the 100 meters with a time of 11.58 seconds, while Brooke Probst competed in the high jump but did not advance past the opening round.

NCAA BASEBALL
The Kentucky baseball team plays for its postseason life today. The Wildcats will take on West Virginia in the Morgantown Regional final. UK is 1-1 against the Mountaineers in the regional, winning 11-9 Saturday before losing by the same score last night. OVC champion Little Rock won the Hattiesburg Regional yesterday with a 6-3 win over Jacksonville State which had eliminated Virginia earlier in the day.

SOFTBALL CWS
Tennessee continues its Women's College World Series run tonight. The Lady Vols will take on defending champion Texas in the semifinal round in Oklahoma City. UT beat the Longhorns 6-3 on Thursday.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL REPORT
Tennessee has reportedly moved on from one of its offseason additions. Former Vols assistant coach and radio host Doug Mathews said Sunday that edge rusher Chaz Coleman has been dismissed from the team. Coleman transferred from Penn State, where he had eight total tackles and a sack last season. Coleman missed most of spring practice while dealing with personal matters.

Meanwhile, Vanderbilt has added another member to its 2027 recruiting class. Three-star wide receiver Davion Crumitie committed to the Commodores on Saturday. Crumitie chose Vandy over offers from Auburn and Virginia Tech, among others.

CARDINALS REPORT
The St. Louis Cardinals picked up a series win over the Chicago Cubs with a 5-1 victory in the rubber match last night at Busch Stadium. Alec Burleson and Masyn Winn each drove in a pair of runs in the victory, while Matthew Liberatore earned his third win after allowing just three hits in 5 1/3 innings. St. Louis is in second place in the NL Central at 31-26 and will send Michael McGreevy to the mound against Texas tonight at 6:45 with a 5:50 pregame show airtime on WNBS.

NBA PLAYOFFS
The Spurs and Knicks are gearing up for the NBA Finals with Game One set for San Antonio on Wednesday. Victor Wembanyama led his Spurs squad past the defending champion Thunder in seven games to advance out of the West. Meanwhile, Jalen Brunson spearheaded the Knicks' four-game sweep over the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals. San Antonio is seeking its first Larry O'Brien trophy since 2014 while New York hasn't won a title since 1973.

STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS
The Stanley Cup Final gets underway this week. The Carolina Hurricanes will host the Vegas Golden Knights in Game One Tuesday in Raleigh. The Canes beat the Montreal Canadiens in five games in the Eastern Conference Final. Out west, the Golden Knights swept the President's Trophy-winning Colorado Avalanche.

NASCAR REPORT
Denny Hamlin is back in the win column after securing a Cracker Barrel 400 win. The driver of the Number 11 car held off Christopher Bell to cruise victory lane at Nashville Superspeedway. Chase Briscoe, Ricky Stenhouse, and Shane van Gisbergen rounded out the top five finishers. The NASCAR Cup Series heads to Michigan International Speedway next Sunday for the Fire Keepers Casino 400.

TITANS REPORT
The Titans are taking a break from their offseason schedule. Tennessee will not take the practice field this week as OTAs continue around the NFL. The Titans have four more voluntary practices ahead of mandatory minicamp, which will be held June 16 and 17.

AREA MINOR LEAGUE REPORT
The Louisville Bats were shut out 3-0 by the St. Paul Saints. The Nashville Sounds beat the Gwinnett Stripers 4-3 at home. The Memphis Redbirds beat the Omaha Storm Chasers 6-5 on the road. The Springfield Cardinals earned a pair of walk-off wins over the Wichita Wind Surge during a doubleheader at Hammons Field yesterday. The Cardinals took game one 4-3 before winning 6-5 in the second contest.
