Happy Birthday Uncle Dave !!!

In Memoriam Uncle Dave Macon (1870-1952)

Born David Harrison Macon on October 7, 1870, in Smartt Station, Tennessee. He didn't turn pro until he was in his 40s, and he still became one of the first big stars of the Grand Ole Opry.

The derby hat, the gold-toothed grin, the banjo flying around in his hands. He sang, joked, and played like a man who couldn't wait for the next song. "Keep My Skillet Good and Greasy" and "Rock About My Saro Jane" still sound like a good time more than a hundred years on.

The Dixie Dewdrop would be 156 today. Somewhere up there, I hope the banjo's tuned and the crowd is laughing.
