"The primary aim in my work is to illustrate and analyze concepts that I find enthralling. The resulting objects deal on many levels with formal and conceptual issues. In my work, I hope to show an equal blending of art, craft, and the presentation of engaging ideas in intriguing ways. The works are meant to involve the viewer visually and intellectually.

My sources include mythology, science, history, and American Folk Art (among others). The objects I make reflect the sensibilities of a person steeped in New England practicality who (for better or worse) ended up learning about things like art history and existentialist philosophy. Many of my sculptures are based on themes from classical mythology viewed through the lens of contemporary events. I have a strong interest in how my themes surface and re-surface throughout human history in many varied (but related) guises. I very much enjoy how masks and figurative sculptures are used in disparate cultures to play out everyday dramas that echo age-old narratives."

Steve Garst Provisional Press: DIY Printmaking

Steve Garst is an artist, educator, and designer-owner of Provisional Press which makes kits to create an affordable printing press out of high-quality parts. While Provisional Press started out as a DIY idea, during the pandemic, Garst developed another kit that hundreds of people have built at home and that many universities used as a solution for students to print at home. Garst will demonstrate the press and present on his work in letterpress, printmaking, and book arts.

We’re excited to announce that two VisCom students, Zeke Bautista and Clare Endris, are finalist presenters at the 2022 BioDesign Challenge Summit! The BioDesign Challenge is an international educational conference and design competition that explores the future of art, design, and biotechnology. 54 teams from 18 different countries will present their biodesign videos.

Zeke and Clare have worked very hard throughout the Spring and Summer semesters to create “The Hyper Garden.” This project proposes creating a floating garden that uses plants called hyperaccumulators, which can remove pollutants from water through their root system. Their design video presents a speculative scenario that uses hyperaccumulation to improve the water quality of the White River.

Zeke and Clare will represent BSU and the School of Art on Tuesday, June 21st from 3:00-3:15pm (EST). You can watch the livestream of their design video at: https://www.biodesignchallenge.org/summit-2022

---
“The Hyper Garden” was created by Zeke Bautista, Clare Endris, and Faith Wittman during the BSU School of Art’s biodesign class, which was taught by Assistant Teaching Professor Devon Ward, who will begin teaching at Auburn University in Fall 2022. The BioDesign Challenge takes place from Monday June 20 – 24th and is freely available to the public.
