The Three Graces (But At School I’m Queen of the Negros Where Everything Smells of Freshly Cut Grass), 2023.

The title references the art historical trope of the three graces, while simultaneously offering a lens into cultural influences like that one black character Jody from Daria, that Tracy Ellis Ross is cast to play in its returning episode form. Jody said these every words, commenting on the power wielded by her identity in ways she had never experienced before. The issue of black representation and seeing yourself beyond other’s perception of who they think you aught a be. This could be over sexualization and misunderstandings of adultification of black womanhood within the developmental years of puberty.

A portrait articulating the regality of nobility and succession, also pronounced my princess dreams of a solo silhouette centering Black girlhood.

Referencing European portraiture, from influences spanning 17th Century Flemish Netherlandish Painting, to the Victorian locket silhouette of a man and a woman, seen notably visualized in the early 2000s movie A Series of Unfortunate Events, bridges the colonial undercurrents into a reinterpretation of the Black aristocrat of the 19th Century, born from merging influences Kara Walker’s silhouettes and the fascinating life and portraits of Queen Charlotte.

Imaged is a self portrait visualized in three successive heads, over a period of three years. The consistency of my hair over decades of loced hair, it's shaping carving out the ridges of my face, will endure and developed alongside my growth, across time, in perpetuity.

SOMETIMES YOU’ VE GOT TO CLOSE A DOOR TO OPEN A WINDOW. (Tyler, The Creator 2019.) “It is no accident that “living purposefully” is the sixth element of self-esteem. According to Branden it entails taking responsibility for consciously creating goals, identifying the actions necessary in alignment with our goals, and paying attention to the outcome of our actions so that we see whether they are leading us where we want to go. Most people are concerned about living purposefully when it comes to choosing the work they do. Unfortunately, many workers feel they have very little freedom of choice when it comes to work. Most people do not grow up learning that the work we choose to do will have a major impact on our capacity to be self-loving. Work occupies or time. But we can all enhance our capacity to live purposefully by learning this to experience satisfaction in whatever work we do. This strategy enabled me to live purposefully.” (Hooks, ph 61-62)
