Since I've moved to the Bay Area, I've begun working with The Pear Theatre in Mountain View, CA in various ways, eventually joining its board. One things I wanted to explore was audience engagement, namely, how do you get people to find and try the shows you've put so much effort to produce. The pandemic has disrupted the live performance greatly, and theatres and other live performance venues have struggled to adapt. How to get audiences to your work is on most every theatre's mind these days.
With that in mind, we've put together this survey about audience behaviors which I'd like to invite everyone to fill out, whether you're completely back to seeing shows or have hardly stepped foot in a live venue in years. If you've gone to a show or shows these days, how do you find them? How do you decide which ones to go to? Is it a review? A poster? An Instagram post? What types of things do you want to see on stage? Musicals? New work? Old standards? Different voices?
Most of this survey is universal, so even if you aren't in the Bay Area there are questions for you to ponder.
This survey will help guide how The Pear engages with the audience in the future, and will be shared publicly this fall.
Hat tip to Pear Artistic Director Sinjin Jones and Robyn Ginsburg Braverman for working with me on this.
In recent years, the reasons why people attend live performances have changed. Please participate in this survey in which we ask why and how you decide to attend live plays, shows, or other events in person.
