🗣️A special note from Director Dennis M. Lickteig:

“In the case of Noël Coward (often referred as the “Neil Simon” of the 1930s), it has been interesting to discover how daring his writing was for his time period, with much coded language and situations.

I made the decision to alter the gender of one of the characters and the sexual orientation of three of them. I feel this will make the play seem more relevant and accessible to a modern, Bay Area audience. In doing so, I have discovered that the issues that the heterosexual couples experience are no different for same sex or blended couples. I truly think Coward would approve and applaud the modification.

The audience can expect a very amusing show with sophisticated language and characters that have extraordinary chemistry, wit, and sexual attraction, but when they are together for any length of time, they become destructive. Watching these parlor games makes for a very entertaining evening.

I truly hope that the play will resonate with Pear’s audiences and that they find both escape and possibly self-discovery in the process.”

About the show: Anne Brontë steps out from the long shadow of her famous sisters in this inventive and sharp play. As she confronts the literary machinery that elevates some voices while silencing others, Anne wrestles with ambition, legacy, and the cost of being overlooked.

Blending humor with pointed insight, this work reclaims a narrative often left untold, inviting us to reconsider who gets remembered and why. Charlotte Brontë serves as a brilliant but deeply ambitious narrator whose efforts to secure her own literary immortality sometimes come at the expense of Anne's reputation.

This play had its premiere at the National Theatre in the UK in 2024, and this production will be its regional premiere.

Please join us in welcoming Lysander Abadia to The Pear as Artistic Associate!

We are thrilled to have Lysander on board. He brings a wealth of artistic knowledge and experience, and we look forward to seeing him thrive and blossom with us. Lysander will also be directing our Season 25 production of ‘Guys and Dolls’ which we know will be nothing short of brilliant.

LYSANDER ABADIA (he/him) last choreographed My Fair Lady at the Pear. He was also the Assistant Director for Come From Away at Theatreworks. Lysander has also directed Pippin, All Shook Up, and Triumph of Love for West Valley Light Opera, as well as Everybody’s Talking About Jamie and Starmites for Playful People. He was also the choreographer for Kinky Boots at City Lights. South Bay audiences have seen him onstage as Walter in Los Altos Stage’s Elf, Trevor in Palo Alto Players’ The Play That Goes Wrong, and Angel in Ohlone Summerfest’s Rent. His upcoming projects include directing Joseph... Dreamcoat for Los Altos Stage and choreographing for Theatreworks’ next season.

*The Pear Playwrights’ Guild is a long running writers’ group of Bay Area playwrights affiliated with The Pear Theatre. The Guild meets primarily online every two weeks to discuss ongoing works of the member playwrights and share playwriting information. Plays written by Guild playwrights are performed in the Pear Theatre's annual Pear Slices short play event, the Fresh Produce developmental readings, and occasionally on the Pear Mainstage.

We solicit submissions from local playwrights to join The Pear Playwrights Guild roughly once a year. Submissions are judged by Guild members and selected applicants are invited to join the Guild.
