Models in the Mountains 2026

Models in the Mountains 2026 Models in the Mountains 2026 is on. We are a NAN qualifier show, now including a performance division. We're going to give Jennifer Buxton a break this year.

We are located in Chilao Campground, Angeles Nat'l Forest, GPS coordinates 34.333886 - 118.023871 Models in the Mountains 2017 is a model horse enthusiast’s gathering in the Angeles National Forest at Chilao School, a 2,000 square foot vintage 1963 school house owned by the non profit association Redbird. The goals of this event are to eat, laugh, have fun, have a horse show, share both the forest

and the school for model horse photography and recreation, to have educational and informative workshops by well known and respected artists in the model horse hobby, to learn from each other in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, and to be able to purchase model horse related items by equine artists. The details of the 2017 gathering have not yet revealed themselves. It's looking like at least one day of workshops and one day of horse show with, weather permitting, outdoor photography opportunities all weekend. We need two judges - one for OF Plastic and one for CM/AR - if we are going to have a show. And we're going to need a class list. We are located in Chilao Campground off of Highway 2, 26 miles back in the Angeles National Forest from the intersection of the 210 Freeway and Angeles Crest Highway (2) in La Canada Flintridge. We are located in the heart of the Angeles National Forest, and two miles from the famous Newcombs Ranch Bar and Restaurant. To reach Chilao School, DO NOT USE GOOGLE. Follow written directions, and look for signs on the road. From the Antelope Valley/14 freeway, exit Angeles Forest Highway. Proceed over the top of the mountain and down into a valley past Mill Creek campground. Turn left onto Upper Big Tujunga Canyon (look for either a Redbird or Models in the Mountains sign). Take Upper Big Tujunga Canyon for 9 miles to Angeles Crest Highway. Turn left. Proceed 6 more miles to Chilao Road/Chilao Campground. Follow signs through campground to Chilao School. From the Los Angeles/San Fernando Valley area, take the 210 freeway to Angeles Crest Highway/Highway 2 exit. Turn north, up hill, away from the city, toward the mountains. If you immediately come to Foothill Boulevard you turned the wrong way. Go up the highway 26 miles to Chilao Road. Turn left into Chilao Campground. Follow signs to Chilao School.

If this is your first time at MIM, food is literally central to the show. There's a kitchen area that most of us will need to walk back and forth through as we place ponies in their classes. I brought some snack things and other folks will bring some things too. And there's also lunch. For lunch I'm making a large pasta salad and a smaller chicken salad. There's a pretty good chance we'll also have spaghetti and meatballs and some other main course kind of items for lunch.

Angeles Crest Highway is the road you will carve to get to the school. Two really basic rules apply. Don't cross the yellow line, and be predictable.

The mountain is a very popular destination for everyone. The fast and furious, the slow, the timid, the bicyclists, the lost...here are some tips for navigating everyone. There are a lot of turn-outs to let people pass. Let them pass. If you have first responders of any kind behind you, they are probably trying to get somewhere. They aren't after you with a car full of plastic ponies. Hold your speed and let them pass as soon as you can.

I have lived up here for a while now. I tend to hug the right side of the lane, for two reasons. If someone is coming around a corner a little wide, you aren't in their path. And if a motorcycle is all fidgety behind you and they want to pass, they can get around you safer if you stay to the right. Motorcyclists with experience will be watching you to see if you are aware of them and how you are going to act.

Watch your mile markers as you are coming up. You will be making a left turn across the highway into Chilao campground right around mile marker 49.70. If you make a habit of watching the mile markers you'll always know where you are at, which is comforting. When you know you are approaching the campground entrance, make sure your turn signal is on, look up the highway and scan for oncoming vehicles for as far as you can see, look in your rear view just in case there's people behind you, make sure they are aware you are turning. Then when you make your turn, do it. Get across the oncoming lane and out of the way. Once you get into the campground there's some bumps in the pavement pretty much immediately. But you made it.

Good morning! Okay, getting excited now, the show is coming right up. The only really big news I have is that it's possible we will receive our new stablemate models in time for the show. A lot of folks ordered some of the new stablemates and then I also bought some for show prizes. Going through my junk mail I found an invoice from Reeves for the stablemate models, dated April 18. It takes a while for freight to ship from New Jersey, but fingers crossed that they will arrive several days before the show. I think at this point if you ordered both the pinto Saddlebred and some stablemates that you have not yet received, I might wait to ship them both together. Unless you want that Saddlebred like right now. I can ship separate. I appreciate your patience.

Models in the Mountains 2026 will once again include a performance division. You don't need to own every last little thing to take part. We'll have a number of obstacles, props, tack and animals that you can borrow, assemble, incorporate. Kathy Marsh will be our performance judge and I am sure she'd love to see some first time faces in the arena. Here's some of what we have to offer. It'll probably take more than one post to round up pictures of everything. Also, if I'm counting right, we've still got room for two more showers.

Saturday, May 2 is our confirmed date for Models in the Mountains. We are looking for a performance judge. We are a NAN qualifier show. Models in the Mountains takes place in the mountains...30 some miles back in the Angeles National Forest at Chilao School which is located in the back of Chilao Campground. If you've committed to coming and you haven't signed up yet, registration remains $50.00 and includes more or less all day food, water, coffee and potentially other non alcoholic libations. Potluck contributions are welcome. Space is limited but it appears there's roughly 2-3 spaces left.

Models in the Mountains 2026 will likely take place on Saturday, May 2. We will probably be a NAN qualifier. The venue is small, intimate, and space is limited. We are so very grateful for the community of hobbyists who support this show. If you send a message here it will go to Meta which, to me, is a nightmare to use. If you could, please email me at redbirds_vision(at)hotmail.com
