IT PROBABLY ISN’T JUST A COINCIDENCE. In the world of Classical Music, how often does the cliché about “dead white male composers” actually fit? And on the other hand, so what? That snarky “dead white male” (DWM) trope is crude, and those dead guys DID write incredible music, which is why it’s still being performed. Rightly so. BUT the exclusion of music by women and people of non-European heritage has a long and deep-rooted history. F***y Mendelssohn was an incredibly gifted performer and composer, whose musical instincts were so keen that her younger brother Felix regularly sought her input on his own work. And yet, her parents were adamant that F***y not pursue music professionally, as that was the domain of men in polite society.
We invite you to form your own opinion about her and others’ overlooked talent, when MVM performs music from F***y Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E-flat major, the gorgeous Rhapsody in E-flat by English composer Ruth Gipps, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s brilliant Fantasiestücke for string quartet, Dutch composer Emmy Frensel Wegener’s Suite for string trio, and the incredible Clarinet Quintet in A major by perhaps the greatest DWM ever, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.
Ivan Petruzziello, clarinet; Mark Miller and Andres Bravo, violins; Ute Miller, viola; Laura Ospina, cello
