IT PROBABLY ISN’T JUST A COINCIDENCE. In the world of Classical Music, how often does the cliché about “dead white male composers” actually fit? And on the other hand, so what? That snarky “dead white male” (DWM) trope is crude, and those dead guys DID write incredible music, which is why it’s still being performed. Rightly so. BUT the exclusion of music by women and people of non-European heritage has a long and deep-rooted history. F***y Mendelssohn was an incredibly gifted performer and composer, whose musical instincts were so keen that her younger brother Felix regularly sought her input on his own work. And yet, her parents were adamant that F***y not pursue music professionally, as that was the domain of men in polite society.

We invite you to form your own opinion about her and others’ overlooked talent, when MVM performs music from F***y Mendelssohn’s String Quartet in E-flat major, the gorgeous Rhapsody in E-flat by English composer Ruth Gipps, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor’s brilliant Fantasiestücke for string quartet, Dutch composer Emmy Frensel Wegener’s Suite for string trio, and the incredible Clarinet Quintet in A major by perhaps the greatest DWM ever, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Ivan Petruzziello, clarinet; Mark Miller and Andres Bravo, violins; Ute Miller, viola; Laura Ospina, cello

It was a pleasure sharing these wonderful musical stories with the attentive students in Sulphur Bluff, Cooper, and Athens yesterday and today!

Thank you, Mount Vernon Music, for bringing musical stories to our students. Students in 3rd through 8th grades heard Rex Willis’ “The Tortoise and the Hare” and “Rumpelstiltskin” meets Mozart.

When a small group of professional classical musicians first walked through what is now Mount Vernon Music Hall, they saw — and heard — a space with the potential to once again become a gathering spot for community inspiration. Back then, in 2005, the one-time Central Christian Church of Mount V...

Dear Friends,

EAST TEXAS GIVING DAY 2026 is just 10 days away! This is Mount Vernon Music’s biggest online fundraiser of the year, and your contributions on this platform have consistently enabled us to fulfill our mission, and prove that music does indeed belong to all of us.

As we look forward to the final program of our incredible season of “Imagining What If?” we are also looking ahead to a landmark season focused on the art of chamber music as a role model for society: “Achieving Harmony.”

Your donations up to $5,000 on East Texas Giving Day will be matched dollar for dollar by the Burt and Nancy Marans Charitable Fund, doubling your impact. We have set a target of $20,000 this year to strengthen MVM in an increasingly precarious funding world. While that is an ambitious goal, we know that with your help it is attainable. Please plan to be a contributor on April 28, 6:00 am to midnight, or give early at https://www.easttexasgivingday.org/organization/mountvernonmusic. Thank you!

WHICH OF THESE MAKES THE BEST STORY: A girl and her grandmother who survive getting swallowed by a wolf? A family of bears who have to defend their cozy home from a human intruder? A barnyard of farm animals whose voices are imitated by a string quartet and their audience? A bird who sings for royalty and ends up competing with a robot? Or perhaps a man who writes beautiful music to help us imagine all of the above? Decide for yourself at Mount Vernon Music’s FREE Family Concert on Saturday, April 18 at 11:00 am when you hear Little Red Riding Hood; Goldilocks and the Three Bears; Farmony; and The Nightingale, all by the incredible Bruce Adolphe, the Piano Puzzler of American Public Media’s Performance Today.

The program also includes two MVM Scholarship winners on tuba and voice.
