If you’ve been around the studio lately, you’ve noticed we have a very special teacher. Satori has been helping us teach classes on and off since the start of MAKE Studios. She’s recently been given more of the reigns and is eager to teach! Nick brings the years of experience and Satori brings a little sass. Quite the dynamic duo 🥹😊

This tiny tea cup holds a big punch in personality. A wood fired piece of pottery goes through a lot. From wet clay to being filled with tea, the journey is long and arduous.

This particular cup started as wet clay in Kentucky, formed with care in Indiana, transported in the family adventure van to North Carolina, fired for 4 days amidst swirls of flame, ash, and camaraderie, then cooled for a week in the kiln. Finally, it made its return journey to Indiana.

When you purchase a handmade piece of pottery, you are purchasing its story as well as the story of the hands who made it.

In a world of automation and instant results, we want to thank you for appreciating the long, artistic process of bringing handmade items into the world.

I (Jess) have been working on finding a making groove. It can be hard when life rears its busy head and all the ideas fall flat on the face of a packed calendar.

But the schedule never seems to let up so I have to force myself to make time but I never regret it! I’m proud of the work that went into this set. The work of making the pieces, yes, but also the working of finding the time to show up. The work of making space for creating.

Next up, hours and hours of glazing 🫠🫠👏🏼👏🏼

Side note: Sage was not being productive. But he was being entertaining.

Our view from the studio is a pretty epic one on most days. The riverfront, the sunsets, the Chino Taco parked right out front on Mondays 🤭🤭🤭🤭

But last night, the skies lit up! Water street was full of people, vendors, and flashes of fireworks from the skies.

We are gearing up for a full week of firing a wood kiln in North Carolina. The beauty of sharing a kiln with other potters is sharing the load of firing a kiln for 4+ days and just hoping for good results.

There are many days I feel that the dishes are never ending. The people need to be fed and the dishes need to be washed....

There are many days I feel that the dishes are never ending. The people need to be fed and the dishes need to be washed. Everyday. All day. But there was a sweet moment of awareness while I was loading dirty dishes today. Most of these were made by my family. Most of these were hand crafted for this very purpose. To be used. To be loved. To be frequented time and time again. In the days of mass production and overconsumption, it feels good to take a moment to appreciate the work that went into each piece.
