Sterling, to make something happen.” The Recreation Park swimming pool was being constructed at the time so the proceeds from the first game went to help that project and the game went on to became an event that has stood the tests of the years....In the beginning, the game was at the end of the season and establi

shed the mythical state champ. After the KHSAA developed the playoff system, the game was moved to the beginning of the season. And although other places around the state started pre-season bowl games there’s still nothing that quite compares with the original. It has been called the Rose Bowl of Kentucky high school football, the Granddaddy of Bowl games and it is on the bucket list of many coaches. The Recreation Bowl has seen many prominent teams and players since 1948 and a board displaying the past games and Star of Stars from the games was installed at Cunningham Field in 2012. and Ovie Evans who joined in next and the many other Recreation Committee members who have served on the committee through the years.

Congrats to Hazard’s sophomore quarterback William Shoptaw as he was named the Star of Stars Saturday night. He passed for 284 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a 46-14 win.
