The Avett Theater

The Avett Theater Coming soon! The Avett Theater—reviving a 1948 Mt. Pleasant landmark as a performing arts and community venue for concerts, films, and events. Opening 2027.

Learn more and support the revival at avetttheater.org. Welcome to The Avett Theater – a regional symbol of community, creativity, and connection. Located in the heart of Mt. Pleasant, North Carolina, the Avett Theater is the reimagining of the historic Paula Theater, which first opened its doors in 1948. Once a cherished Main Street landmark, the Paula was a place where neighbors gathered to see

films, share stories, and experience the magic of small-town life under its marquee. Today, we’re restoring that legacy — transforming the beloved Paula into the Avett Theater, a state-of-the-art performing arts and community venue designed to serve Cabarrus County, Stanly County, and the surrounding region. With seating configurations ranging from 35 to over 600, the Avett Theater will provide a professional stage for local talent and a dynamic space for national and regional touring artists, community gatherings, business events, and private celebrations. The project is made possible through extraordinary community support and visionary leadership — including a generous gift from the Avett family, whose name and story are deeply woven into Mt. Pleasant’s history. Their legacy continues to inspire creativity and connection, just as the theater that now bears their name will for generations to come. More than a venue, The Avett Theater will be a cornerstone for cultural growth, a platform for emerging voices, and a destination for creativity in central North Carolina. Its restoration honors our past while shaping a vibrant artistic future for our region. The Avett Theater — where history meets harmony, and community takes center stage.

As we clear out the former Paula Theater in Mount Pleasant to make way for the new Avett Theater, the past keeps introducing itself piece by piece.

Here's just some of what we've uncovered:

✨ A popcorn machine tucked under the stairs, possibly dating back to The Paula.

🛒 A grocery store cart (you may have seen this one before... 😉)

🎱 A pinball machine

🔐 A safe from the old Dover Grocery next door (now Buddy’s Place). Combination missing, no idea what's inside, mystery intact.

🚬 A vintage Camel poster from when cigarette ads were everyday décor.

🌾 An old flour bag from Statesville Flour Mills.

🚪 The original Paula Theater doors.

👉 FUN FACT: Grocery cart, pinball, and popcorn machines have all made cameos in music videos. 👈

All proof that this building has stories. Mount Pleasant, what do you remember from The Paula or anything else that's called this space home?

Happy Avett Day!

Avett Day was first declared by the Town of Mount Pleasant Board of Commissioners on January 10, 2022, to be observed annually on February 7. Reverend Clegg Avett, Martha Avett, Jim Avett, Susie Avett, Bonnie Avett Rini, Scott Avett and Seth Avett were each honored in the proclamation.

On the first Avett Day in 2022, we celebrated with a new sign at the Hwy. 49/Hwy. 73 interchange. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1KZiE78XaJ/

On the second Avett Day in 2023, we celebrated with a suggested Avett tour of Cabarrus County. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1GhYcCf9D8/

On the third Avett Day in 2024, we celebrated Avett Day with an updated suggested Avett tour of Cabarrus County. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/16NKRTSecv/

On the fourth Avett Day in 2025, we celebrated Avett Day by sharing a link of the Orion’s Belt music video filmed in the old Paula Theater and a teaser of things to come. https://www.facebook.com/share/p/1ALmubaFmA/

On this, the fifth Avett Day in 2026, we are celebrating Avett Day by sharing the new website for the planned Avett Theater in downtown Mount Pleasant. The theater, named to honor the artistic contributions of Cabarrus County’s own Avett family, will be renovated as a music and performing arts venue and operated as a nonprofit organization, bringing a rich tradition of performing arts to Mount Pleasant, NC and the region. Be one of the first to make a donation towards building renovations to bring the historic Paula Theater back as The Avett Theater.

For those of you that don't know, the Avett family has been part of the Mount Pleasant community for 75 years. The Reverend Clegg Avett ministered at Mount Pleasant Methodist Church for six years starting in 1947, a time during which Jim Avett was born to Clegg and his wife Martha, who was a teacher, concert pianist and church organist. During that time, Rev. and Mrs. Avett bought property and put down roots to which Jim would later return with his wife Susie to raise a family, after serving in the Navy and working as a bridge-building welder. Jim and Susie returned to eastern Cabarrus County from Wyoming, and their children Bonnie, Scott, and Seth attended A.T. Allen Elementary, Mount Pleasant Middle, and Mount Pleasant High Schools. During and shortly after high school, Scott and Seth worked with separate bands Margo and Nemo 1934 who both played multiple gigs at Mount Pleasants' best venue the "Lion's Hut" in the late 1990s. Scott and Seth went on to form The Avett Brothers and achieved great success in doing so, recording multiple albums, touring, and receiving several Americana Music awards, Grammy nominations, and induction into the NC Music Hall of Fame. Jim Avett also has quite a music career as a guitar-picking story-teller and holds annual show through the Cabarrus Arts Council at the Davis Theater in downtown Concord. The talented Bonnie Avett Rini often joins her father and brothers singing and playing the piano. Jim and Scott are also accomplished visual artists in painting and printmaking.
